Forums Payment cards American Express Cancelling Plat (Am I approaching it correctly?)

    Does this make sense?

I just got the Amex Plat (1 month back), and will be surpassing the 6k spend in a week (at 5500 right now)

    I did the math:

Option 1: I cancel the Plat in 3 months. Get the pro-rata of 9 months. So I only pay fees of ~150

Get the following benefits: 900 pounds (4*150 dining credit + 200 amex travel + 2*50 harvey nichols) + (6000 MR for txn + 12000 MR for referral) and potentially let go of the 60K MR SUB. Given that wifey + I also have Mastercard Barclaycard (so potentially 300K avios from there), the 60K MR has little value if it helps me save on the fees.

Option 2: I suck it up and go through the entire year and pay 575 as fees
Get pretty much the same benefits + 60K MR.

I am really not seeing the point of Option 2, esp since once I hit the milestone, I’d rather spend that on BAPP or MasterCard Avios Plus etc. I also don’t need lounge access, since I already have that covered via other cards. And don’t intend on having any referrals (to utilize the Plat referral bonuses). And am inclined to go with Option 1.

Does my broad thinking make sense? Or is there any fault in my assumptions (like for example, I won’t get a pro-rata if I cancel Plat in 3 months). Would love the input.

You can cancel at any time and get a pro-rata refund. If you have earned the SUB then you keep it whenever you cancel, though you would have to transfer the points out (eg to Avios)

From what I was hearing in other threads on HFP, if you cancel Amex Plat in the first year, your SUB gets clawed back.

Where did you read that? Not the case at all. As long as you’ve hit your qaulifying spend that’s not the case at all.
