Forums Payment cards Virgin Atlantic Cash advance fees – MCC related

I’m getting hit with CA fees right left and center – paying doctors fees, dentist fees, school fees, childcare fees. I think the common factor is that they all use the 8999 MCC. Now, there’s no way of know what MCC a merchant might use which virtually renders this card worthless. I’ve already taken them to ombudsman once and got fees refunded but have since had more CA fees making this card very unusable in lots of situations!

    Anyone else experiencing this?

Is this with direct payments or via Curve? I pay school fees directly with this card and have never been charged an extra fee – last payment was March. Also use it with Curve for dentist and hairdresser.

I had a similar situation a while back with my Hilton Barclaycard, although only a one-off. Got charged a cash advance fee for a souvenir I bought in a shop in London. Barclaycard refunded it, eventually – it took multiple phone calls and a lot of faffing, for which they compensated me £25.

The lesson learned seems to be: be careful buying anything in shops that are also bureaux de change… (from what I could gather, I suspect they have different card readers for each side of the business and perhaps got them mixed up – I assume accidentally, unless there’s some advantage to them of deliberately putting purchases through as cash advances?)
