Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Flying to California next month and looking at ticket prices.

Solo traveller – Outbound in Premium Economy, returning in Economy.

    Cash price is £1,227.36
Avios redemption would be 39,000 points plus £642.36

This would mean I’m redeeming 39,000 points at £585, equivalent to 1.5p per Avios, correct?
And as a target redemption price this would be towards the upper end of potential?

    Thanks!

1.5p is an ok return if your avios were free or cost you less than that. There’s potential for much higher, however, depending on cash prices of course. I’m not sure about the return in Y, though, for a flight of that length would you not consider using more avios to return in PE as well? Economy taxes are terrible value so you might find it’s not that much extra money either for PE.

I like to calculate how many miles I would be earning for the cash fare and factor that in. And sometimes I want the tier points and other times I don’t care.

But I am happy to redeem Avios at anything above 1p per point.

The obvious first question is whether this is the cash price for that flight, or the best cash price available on ANY flight that day. If B then I’d use Avios.

As far as counting accrued Avios on cash tickets into the equation, I don’t. Partly because I’m lazy and partly because the flexibility of Avios tickets has real value, so I treat that value is offsetting the Avios earned on cash in my value equation.

My dates are fixed and there’s no availability in anything other than Economy that I can see (sadly).
