Scenario: my wife got the platinum in september 2022 and plans to downgrade at the end of the 12 months period to a cheaper Amex. We have used the platinum dining credits in 2022 and 2023 (150 x 4).
Question 1: Will Amex try and claw anything back when we cancel after the end of the 12 month period?
Question 2: to ensure we don’t pay the hefty annual fee again , how far in advance of the 12 month anniversary should I let them know we want to downgrade?
Question 3: is it better card holder behaviour to keep it for the 12 month period like I’m suggesting rather than milk benefits and cancel?
Many thanks!
Q1: No
Q2: The membership fee refund is currently pro-rata (I think this changes sometime in October)
Q3: Doesn’t seem to be anything *currently* preventing people from cancelling early without consequence (I think this changes sometime in October)
If you contact them now you may get a retention bonus to stay. You could then cancel in Sept if you don’t want to pay the annual fee again. Amex don’t seem that bothered. (Although it seems they are getting rid of pro rata refunds in October)
Always contact Amex first and ask to be transferred to the retention team. Tell them you want to downgrade or cancel the card. Ask what retention offers are available. From then on, you can decide if you want to keep it or not.
With regards to the timing of fees, maybe you can look back one year ago and see when were you charged so you can predict when best to cancel.
