Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club Competing flights query

Sorry this is a bit long winded. Taking my dad to visit my brother in New York, have used Barclays upgrade voucher for the outbound flight, so need to make the return leg into a return flight to avoid the ridiculous one way prices. Handily my dad is flying to/from Glasgow so gonna do NY-LDN, LDN-GlA. As usual with BA’s barely working system the flight I want to book which says $572 for NY leg and $97 for Glasgow leg cones out at total of $2404 for 2 rather than $1338 argh! However if I book the very cheapest $52 flight at the end of the day (would mean him hanging about in the airport for 12 hours which he isn’t gonna do) it manages to add them up correctly……so finally my question if I book this cheaper flight can my dad then book himself a separate Lon-gla flight on BA earlier that day or will he be prevented in doing so as no way he could then make the later flight that he has booked from London that he doesn’t want to take?

If you’re asking if he can book a seperate earlier ticket and then no-show for the second leg of the original ticket then yes.

Assuming he’s hand luggage only it won’t be an issue.

Yes sort of, I guess I am assuming higher standards on the BA system and that it should know he can’t get on both those flights and block him booking the second one but if it’s not smart enough for that then all good! He will have luggage but I am assuming as the flight will be booked as two separate legs his bag won’t be checked through?

99% sure they will check the luggage all the way through from NY-LHR-GlA on the last flight if that is all on one PNR, they won’t short check so that you can pick it up at LHR and re-check for an earlier flight on a seperate ticket. They won’t check from NY to the earlier ticket on seperate PNRs either.

BA/Oneworld are most unhelpful in situations like this.

Can you not book the return leg with avios as well? You’re probably going to be overcharged for a one-way cash flight whichever option you go for?
The domestic leg would also then be free.

I wonder what they would at NY check in if you showed your ticket for the earlier flight and told them that the luggage needed to go onto that flight? Would they seriously insist on tagging it through to the later flight, knowing that will cause a delay to the flight while they search out the luggage to remove it from the hold?

It’s not their problem. He may get lucky, maybe not

Perhaps more importantly, what happens to the luggage when it gets ejected from the later flight and the no-show passenger is not there to collect it? I wouldn’t expect the airline to take responsibility for sending it on later.

I had two tickets for the same flight about 18 months ago. One was the return flight of BA LHR-PSA. The other was the start of PSA-lHR-SIN-LHR. BA contacted me to say I had a double booking. If you do book same day flights, I would ensure BAC FF number is not on both bookings. As highlighted by @AndrewT, if bag is checked through for later flight, not only is it likely to hold up flight whilst bag is off loaded at LHR, the airline is unlikely to forward it to GLA.

I think there is a big difference between BA noticing someone having 2 tickets for the same flight and someone having a ticket for 2 flights on the same day to the same place. I’m sure people with cash to spare regularly book 2 flights on the same day to avoid being stuck if they arrive too late to take the earlier flight.

If the saving is substantial then how about using sendmybag or luggagetoship, to send that suitcase from NY to home.
