Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club Data point: BA (positive) response to medical problem

  • 16 posts

Following a cancer diagnosis some months ago I checked in here to see whether BA would be flexible regarding extending Amex Vouchers and Executive Club tier levels. I wasn’t fit to fly for several months due to treatment, and am still not.

It took an age to sort out but in the end BA (i) did extend my voucher beyond two years, although only until 10 days after my consultant’s ‘not fit to fly before’ date, which was of little use (but my fault for not using it earlier); and (ii) renewed my status for another year without any flying.

Whatever our frustrations with BA, they have handled my situation compassionately. I’ve a long relationship with the airline, once at the heights of Concord Room access and lunches at the House of Lords, but now a very marginal silver with a minimal CIV.

Wanted to post this as a guide to what others might reasonably expect. I believe Rob reports others have received the same.

Good to hear. It isn’t discussed regularly, but BA were also always very good when travelling with (diagnosed) mobility needs – once you fill out the assistance request online and submit supporting documentation, you are helped by a real person via email to secure things like seat reservations for those on the booking (with no fee). Given all of the areas of life that a serious illness can impact upon, extending a little bit of benefit and personal consideration does feel quite refreshing.

Thanks for sharing this positive outcome. In my experience BA is very good with illness. Also sounds like good news with the cancer treatment too, I think. I am pleased for you.

My wife was ill last year and couldn’t fly. BA extended her Gold Guest List membership by a year upon production of evidence of her medical condition. BA were very understanding, which was appreciated.
