I did an upgrade online and my debit card has been debited 2 x 125 euros and 1 x 250 euros for the same transaction. It is not an authorisation but actually a debit on my account. Has anyone else experienced this and how do I go about sorting it?
You can raise a chargeback with your debit card provider if an incorrect charge has been made, but you must first attempt to resolve the matter with the airline and tell them to confirm they are reversing the erroneous charge(s) within seven days, failing which you will make the chargeback claim. Owing to the different nature of debit vs credit cards, it is quite possible the debit transaction(s) will get reversed. Retailers can’t make ‘holds’ on debit cards, so they sometimes make actual charges that are later reversed.
Ok, I’ll wait a few days to see if it gets reversed and if not then I’ll attempt to contact BA.
If it’s BA, you will probably see an automatic reversal shortly. For practical reasons/simplicity, BA makes a single card charge but afterwards splits it out by passenger so you see a line on your card statement for each passenger. That works fine with credit cards as the split takes place behind the scenes, but that can’t be done with debit cards so you get a charge and refund and the latter always take slightly longer to appear.
