Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Difference between BA Economy and Business for London City to Berlin

  • 853 posts

    Hi,

I want to fly LCY to Berlin, the only redemption left is business class for the date I want. I can use my Barclays upgrade voucher for 2. If I value 1 avios at 1p, it is basically the same price as buying the economy tickets with cash (and I can use my e voucher). For a <2 hour flight is there actually any benefit to business? Is there even a lounge at City Airport?

Am I basically wasting my Barclays voucher?

    Thx

No lounge. No empty middle seat. No real priority boarding as almost all passengers from City have BA status.

All you get is a better meal and a seat at the front.

Every seat on these flights is 2:2 format.

On the City Flyer, economy gets a snack and drink (including alcoholic!)

I really rate these flights personally.

And with the proposed change to liquids going through security at LCY next month, you’ll be able to take a full sized deodorant with you too!

So for Avios redemption, only benefit is the meal.
If cash tickets, meal and extra Avios and TP.

WRT the priority boarding comment from Rob, my last LCY flight, there were plenty of group 4+. The flight was completely full, to the point they used 1B for an economy passenger. 1-3 boarded together after the volunteers who gate checked their hand baggage.

Really negligible benefits for Club on an LCY outbound, but Inbound you can probably add a lounge!

Don’t forget the extra CE baggage allowance.

Useful if you don’t have status.

Out of interest what happened to the old lounge BA used to use for their LCY-JFK flights? Did that just get returned to LCY?

Yes, it was gate 24, which is now just a regular gate waiting area with seating. Bar and snack serving areas removed.

Yes, I forgot that. Useful if you are going for 2 weeks or like to pack the kitchen sink 😉

I live in Berlin and fly the LCY-BER route regularly. Agree with everyone above it’s a complete waste of an upgrade voucher unless you can make full use of the generous club luggage allowance (which I did when I moved out here and cashed in 8,500 Avios for a reward flight for this purpose!) It’s a short flight and plenty comfortable in the 2-2 formation as the seats are a little bigger than in a 3-3 you’d get LHR-BER. The fact you get a free tipple makes it that bit nicer and cosier on the LCY flight. If I were you I’d buy the cash flights, pocket the tier points and save your upgrade voucher for a longer club journey from LHR/LGW where you’ll benefit from a lounge and better onboard facilities. As an aside, if you fly back from BER, the Tempelhof lounge is not particularly inspiring and the food is poor, so another reason to save your voucher.

Thanks all, because of the way the Barclays voucher worked I only had the option to pay max avios and £1. If I cancel I get the voucher, all avios back and lose £1? Is that right?

Just pushing it up the recent thread to see if anyone knows the answer to my cancellation question above. Thanks!

Correct, the £35 per cancellation are from the £ you paid which in this case is just £1.
