Forums Payment cards American Express Do I lose my companion voucher if I close the card it was earned with?

  • 4 posts

PLEASE FORGIVE ME. I know this is asked quite frequently but I am having a tough time pulling the trigger on closing my premium BA card as I don’t want to lose the companion voucher I have just earned.

So as the headline says: if I close my card (completely, not downgrade to the free card), can I still use my companion voucher?

    Forgiven.

It works for now, but you never know when BA and Amex choose to enforce the terms.

I really wish they enforce it so that 1) these questions stop, but more importantly, 2) it reduces the churning of this card.

I’m sorry for picking on you, particularly as you begged forgiveness, but if you’re aware this is asked a lot you’ve obviously looked it up and seen the previous answers.

The users here can’t give any more reassurance, handholding or whatever it is you’re seeking. Sometimes folk need to be brave and take responsibility for their own actions.

Can you tell that I’m frustrated seeing this question asked over and over again? 🙂

You need to have an Amex card that you can use to pay the taxes and fees. It doesn’t need to be in your name necessarily but you will need to say it is when booking – Amex don’t match names, so that won’t be a problem.

In theory Amex could make it so you have to keep the card open as per the T+C, but that would arguably be an unfair term, becuase it would mean having to keep the card open for up to 2 extra years to use a reward you’d earned in year 1. I suspect they won’t try, given that they haven’t so far, but you never know.

You could just scroll through the BAEC forum (or the HFP articles) and get the answer, except that it’s clogged up by the same things being asked over and over!

We need a filter like the one which reads “It looks like you’ve already said that…” when you accidentally hit the submit button twice 😂

Thank you all and sorry again.
