Forums Payment cards American Express Do refunds count towards paying off balance (credit card)?

My understanding here is you have to make a debit card payment/bank transfer for the statement balance (if you want to pay off in full), any refunds don’t count and therefore you can be in credit if you paid off in full and start to get refunds.

Is this actually the case? I had a refund after my statement was generated and for a while it showed “no payment required at this time”, the refund was larger than statement balance. Now in the app, “Balance Due” is showing full balance but “£0.00 minimum payment due on X” is showing… I know AMEX IT issues can be funny…

I believe this changed at some point whereby refunds don’t count but i don’t know if it has changed again

It might depend on the exact card you have or even when you took it out, but the T&Cs for Gold at least are explicit that refunds from merchants don’t count as a payment made by you – and also that you must pay off the full statement balances to avoid an interest charge.

If you pay manually I’d suggest you do. If you pay by direct debit and they don’t collect it of their own accord – well, it feels like you’d have an unanswerable case if they did apply a charge.

Technically you don’t have a balance to pay and therefore don’t have to pay, but many banks have implemented it poorly in systems that it can cause a lot of trouble if you don’t follow the ‘expected’ procedure of paying off the statement. This can even result in your credit profile taking a huge hit if they allow systems to report a missed payment. Amex is usually better in this aspect, but call them to confirm if you have any doubts.
