Forums Other Destination advice Does anyone know on which domestic routes ANA use special livery?

    Hello all,

I’m going to be travelling to Japan (my long flight will be with VS to Shanghai) in April, I haven’t got any firm plans yet other than my flights in and out of LHR.

I’d like to know if anyone knows the domestic routes where ANA use a special livery aircraft, they’re unfortunately rather vague on their website about domestic routes, and can only provide information up until the end of March

I’m fairly certain their Pokémon aircraft are only used on long haul international routes, I’m not too fussed by that, it’d be great of course, but if the aircraft is limited by special routes only, oh well !

On a side note, I’ve got a lot of time to spend in Japan, and I know I’ll be very keen on visiting Hokkaido and Kochi islands in particular, I need to try and do some proper planning, but at the same time, planning a trip in advance isn’t always great since you’ve got no idea how much you’ll enjoy any particular place until you’re there

Anyone who can help, please comment below !

How long is a long time? If you have a couple of months or more it’d definitely worth going to Hokkaido and Kyushu but otherwise I’d stick to a few cities to make the most of it.

I’ve allotted myself around 4 and a half weeks in total, although I’m flying via PVG and I plan to spend around a week in total in China, I’m also going to go and the DMZ from Seoul.
I’ll have around 2 and half to 3 weeks for all of Japan. When I met some Japanese travellers on one of my world travels, they said that 2 weeks for the whole country would be fine.
I’m not at all sure how long most people spend in Osaka and Kyoto.
I’m definitely keen on going to Hokkaido, I’ll have to have a better look at Kyushu see if it’s got what I’m looking for.

I haven’t made any firm travel plans, I’ll be particularly drawn to the parts of the country where I can see traditional Japan, I’m not really too fussed by city life, so I won’t be spending too much time in Tokyo.

I’m summary though, I’m open to all parts the country, I’m certain all flights go via Osaka and Tokyo, that’s not a problem, if anything it’ll help me get around easier

Ummm… I’m going to have to disagree in a big way on this. Nowhere near enough time for “the whole country”.

With only two weeks, I’d probably concentrate on just a few cities (e.g., Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka), although this may vary depending on interests. Hokkaido is at least a week or more by itself for me.

Yeah I fully understand what you’re saying, when they said to me 2 weeks, I was rather dubious, and didn’t think that’d be anywhere enough to enjoy all that their homeland has to offer, although at the same time, you’ve got no idea what a country / region will be like until you’ve been there and seen it with your own eyes.

I’ll probably do about 3 days for Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto.

I’m not sure where exactly in Hokkaido I’ll go, but I’ll figure something out. I definitely have got to go to Shikoku

Three days in total for these cities or each?

Even three days each is tight in my estimation, so hopefully the latter, unless you’re not keen on cities and aren’t bothered by visiting surrounding areas (e.g., Nara, Kobe, Himeji, Nikko, etc.).

As an idea, on our first trip to Japan, we spent a total of two weeks across just those places and still didn’t do everything we wanted and we’ve since gone back.

For me, Hokkaido and Shikoku are for road trips, which I think will be tough to squeeze into a two-week trip that includes first-time visits to Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. Others may have different views or interests when visiting Hokkaido and Shikoku, but personally I’d leave them for another trip where you have more time.

I’m not sure how long I’ll spend in each city, either way I’m not someone who’ll only travel to big cities whenever I go somewhere, if anything the opposite ! But of course having said that, there’s lots too see and do in cities with always makes them a great visit, just ideally not somewhere as a stand alone destination

Would love to know what draws you to Shikoku.
I was there in 2018, walking part of the Shikoku 88 Pilgrimage route followed by stays in Kotohira, near Kochi & Takamatsu. Absolutely loved it – but I’d be the first to say that it is a niche location, especially if its your first visit to Japan.
