Forums Payment cards American Express Error when trying to upgrade

  • 33 posts

I have tried upgrading from the gold credit card to the platinum one but upon logging in I get the following message “We’re sorry. You do not have a card eligible for this offer.”

Does anyone know why this might be?

    I have the same error.

I called them, and a helpful agent told me that they had paused the offer (I didn’t quite get the reason, he mentioned it to me but I didn’t understand it fully). To be noted that the initial expiry date of the offer was 9th of Jan 2024, so clearly Amex changed their mind in a big way to stop it that early.

He said that they are currently evaluating what to do, and will probably come up with a new offer in the future.

    I’m really disappointed…

It rarely pays to hang around with these things and this offer was extraordinarily generous given that it was addressed to people otherwise ineligible for a SUB. I’m surprised they didn’t weight it more towards Y2 as the 75k seemed likely more than enough to attract too many hit and run merchants who will be long gone before they pay a full fee.

If they are keen to get more Plat sign ups, they ought to have some reduced temporary SUB offer that allowed one to keep Gold rather than be forced to lose a good card, even if one could potentially reapply later.

I’ve had a similar problem, however, the rep told me it was because my gold card wasn’t old enough (it was 14 months). They wouldn’t tell me how old it needed to be to meet eligibility.

This is inaccurate as I upgraded after only having the Gold card for 8 months.

I don’t think this is accurate information from the agent. I have just upgraded now, and it went through fine. I was presented with the choice of upgrading my Gold or ARCC cards (would have preferred to keep the Gold, but didn’t want to risk missing out on the 75k, as the terms state you must upgrade from Gold, although someone posted that they upgraded their ARCC and got the points anyway).

The Plat card is showing in my app immediately.

I have had the Gold for nigh on 2 years, and my renewal was coming up later this month.

@aq.1988 Amex agents give inaccurate information all the time, often making it up to try and appease or fob off the customer. This avoids them having to tell the customer computer thinks you’re a chancer.

Those who control these things are also not stupid enough to divulge the recipe for the ‘secret sauce’ (either to agents or customers) which is in any event regularly adjusted. Either they decide you are eligible, based on various criteria, or you are not.

You sound like an eminently more suitable upgradee than some of the earlier complainants!

@JDB, I find it amazing how agents are confident to outright lie or give false information to customers.

I’m glad I’ve managed to upgrade to Plat in good time so I can try to make use of the 2023 credits.

I’m not surprised tbh, but it it’s definitely what the agent told me.

I’m not suprised the agent just fobbed me off tbh! Not sure why they’d not want me to upgrade though, I put a fairly decent amount of spend on the card.

@Gibbonssss, there is now a minimum income requirement, in case that could be a factor?

I assume I meet it… do you know what it is?

    It’s £35k for Plat.

There’s more info in an article on hfp from a few months ago.

    Definitely >> £35k so I don’t think it’s an income eligibility problem.
