Be mindful if you book an Avios reward flight with Finnair then cancel the Avios are NOT returned instantly or at least in a 24-48 hour period. In fact the website states on cancellation this can take 7 working days. Having checked the website and used the ‘Refund Status’ mechanism to check it acknowledges the request as in progress but with a possible 3 week turnaround time.
Frustrating as I want to try and tie up some other Avios flights soon but am now stuck in cancellation and transfer limbo.
I will try to update this post once I have directly spoken Finnair.
It is a Warning to anyone who needs their Avios back quickly after a Finnair cancellation. It won’t happen! This is woefully inadequate and Finnair will need to certainly improve this situation. Dare I say it……makes BA look slick….uhm…🤔
A relevant warning, but I’m not sure why Finnair should think that they will ‘need’ to change anything.
Was this done through the chat or online? I recently cancelled an AY award via chat, the agent cancelled and the points were returned immediately to my account. I was rebooking & had enough points, so was looking to process it as a change but the agent said to just cancel and rebook separately.
I also recently cancelled three avios tickets, the avios refund was credited immediately. I guess it’s more like “it takes times to cancel a ticket” than it takes time for the refund. My experience was that long as the cancellation request was processed, the refund happened immediately.

online so not sure what the hold up on the points being returned is. Thanks for the heads up
Question on Finnair Avios bookings. What are the fees for cancelations and are all classes and ticket types cancellable? (We know BA is £35 and IB does NOT allow cancellation of non-IB flights)
Not an Avios booking, but I’ve been waiting 2 months for a cash booking refund on a Finnair biz flex ticket. Still in progress. Fast they are not!

My interactions with AY since April have been a breath of fresh air compared to dealing with BA given I have no status it’s been very impressive. All carriers have their quirks but I’ll take AY over BA any day

Suspect this is due volume given their ongoing strikes

Yes, that was the reason in this morning’s email saying ‘oops, sorry’. It’s a few k I’d happily have back on my credit card!
Had to cancel an avios booking with finnair earlier this year (same flight through ba was 20k more!)
They refunded me half of the avios right away, and the other half – only when I contacted them to demand them!
And I got my taxes refunded only 6 weeks later.
Getting to an agent through their chat is also a nightmare.
Never used their website before but they appeared like a shitshow.
Thanks @Dvir .. do you remember how much it costs to cancel a Finnair booking in Finnair’s website?
Pretty sure it’s EUR50 cancellation, it was stated on my Avios booking confirmation. However when I cancelled, only lost the cash component which was less than this, got the full Avios back.

Gotcha so EUR 50 and works like BA where you pay less.
The next question is in regards to that bug where stale accounts lost all their Avios if you transferred them (as the system thought you had not done anything for 2 years and that your avios should be “expired”).
