Hello, I have an old style companion ticket which needs using up soon.
looking at some options, the avios required is actually less to travel in first than it is in club, but the taxes are almost double.
an an example 170,000 avios plus £900 tax for business, or 160,000 plus £1700 for first.
I’ve got a significant amount of avios and would rather pay more avios for first and reduce the tax. Am I doing something wrong when searching for flights, or is this something which can be sorted by ringing up and not booking online?
This is a “feature” of the extension of RFS to Club – where you can pay more avios and less cash – but not to F.
AFAIK Reward Flight Saver fares allow you to reduce, with extra Avios, taxes to nominal £1…but there are no RFS fares for First class.
If you dig out Rob’s series of articles from last December about the RFS changes (and non-changes in the case of F awards), there’s a full analysis of current avios pricing and why it sometimes seems illogical!
I think there are still different cash/avios options even with F cabin in the booking, however it becomes terrible value if you mix cabins with the new pricing. You’re better sticking to all F or all CW/PE.
The mixed cabins is an interesting one – I had a return CW booked Johannesburg to London using a 241 this coming January, and saw First availability pop up for the return leg. I called to see the upgrade price out of interest, thinking that mixing cabins would be awful value. But they refunded 15k Avios and charged me £390 cash for the upgrade. Using 1p valuation that’s cost me £240 for a leg in First on 11 hour flight + I get to use the CCR on way back (first time!). It’s also the A380 so CW are the crappy old style, no brainer upgrade for me, I was pleasantly surprised!
CCR can be accessed on arrival to UK on inbound first ticket? That’s good to know
Inbound First followed by a further connection?
Oh I see Joburg is the start/end point of the trip.
I wonder if joburg-ldn-joburg has lower APDs than ldn-joburg-ldn.
Or for that matter, are APDs lower if you start and end point are outside of UK and you are flying in and out of uk….particularly for premium class APDs.

UK APD only applies to flights departing the UK.
There is no reduced rate on a simple point to point trip like this just because your trip starts outside of the Uk.
