Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club Flight cancellation when using Barclays Upgrade Voucher- what can I claim for?

  • 23 posts

    We were due to fly to Geneva last Sunday afternoon and at relatively short notice the flight was cancelled and we were rebooked and downgraded onto a flight the next morning.

    Can anyone share a summary of what I can claim for (eg we incurred an Uber cancellation fee as we only got notified of the cancellation less than an hour before we were due to be collected) and if we need to raise a claim to get the avios credited (I assume I can get something back – either the voucher or the avios?)

    Will we have paid APD on a business class fare and is there something due back there?

    Finally is there anything due from an EU reg’s perspective given we ended up going the following day and missing some of our break? We received a message saying our flight may have been delayed due to ATC restrictions resulting from weather but they didn’t confirm that was the reason for the cancellation.

    Thanks in advance

    @dynamites

    You are entitled to:

    1) compensation of £220 pp if the reason for cancellation was within BA’s control although it sounds as though that may not be the case. Claim anyway and let BA pay or cite reason for refusal.

    2) irrespective of cancellation reason, any costs of accommodation, transportation or food incurred by the overnight cancellation. BA would pay a hotel, but if you just went home, you won’t get anything save the extra travel costs.

    3) reimbursement for the downgrade at 30% of the actual fare cost plus the difference in APD. On these short haul flights the Avios difference between the classes will usually give a higher result, so ask for that.

    4) return of the voucher or the value thereof in cash or Avios – tell them which you prefer, particularly if the voucher is now close to expiry or you won’t have much use for it.

    The Uber cancellation fee isn’t BA’s responsibility, but could be covered by insurance. The loss of part of your holiday is supposed to be covered by the compensation.

    Was this BA736? If so, reason was weather so no compensation for cancellation (JDB point 1).

    This was confirmed over on this thread on FlyerTalk which is really useful and monitored/populated by BA insiders

    All points mentioned by JDB are still OK
