Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

I’m seeing news reports that US (and now UK citizens) are being advised to stay in place if in Qatar. I’m due to fly in 2 weeks on BA and then from Doha to Bangkok the next day. I’ve also read all BA flights were cancelled yesterday.

Has anyone been affected? I can’t do anything so will just wait to assess the situation in 2 weeks. I’m staying in the city centre for that night before the onwards flight and can switch to a hotel nearer the airport if needed. My main concern is the flight with BA being cancelled so we won’t be able to make the connection the following day. I can’t see that Qatar have cancelled flights though so there’s a possibility of being moved onto one of their flights instead I guess.

I have friends who live in Doha, and situation sounds very fluid albeit life goes on in the city.

2 weeks is a long time and you’re probably just going to have to wait it out. Given BAs partnership with Qatar, likely that you could just lobby BA to be placed on a Qatar flight at similar time to yours if BAs flights are still postponed at the time of travel.

We’re due to fly from Edinburgh to Singapore with Qatar Airways in just over two weeks, travelling with two children. However, with recent reports of explosions, I’m now concerned and feel we may need a backup plan.

The tickets were booked using Avios points, so I’m hoping they are cancellable. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find any alternative Avios availability. I’ve already checked Finnair and British Airways. Cash fares are an option, but with short notice and others wanting to avoid the Middle East, prices will be rising quickly.

It’s obviously not an ideal situation, but we are at least flexible as this is just a family holiday.

I’m keen to hear what others are thinking about the situation.

I’d be thinking that 24 hours is a long time in politics and military operations. I’d be holding off making a decision for now.

If you flew Finnair, you’d be flying via the Gulf – based on my route Helsinki to Osaka the other month.

If I was really really nervous, and had to get to Singapore, I’d be going via the USA.

But I’d wait and see too.

    .

You can cancel avios flights upto 24 hours before departure and just pay the cancellation fee.

However if BA cancel the flight you can still cancel but not pay the fees.

It also opens up rebooking options which don’t require there to be avios availability.

You still have a couple of weeks so I’d take a wait and see approach.

I wouldn’t be too hasty, storm in a teacup, the whole thing was choreographed.
Normal service will be resumed tomorrow – if it isn’t already.
