I woke up today to find that my phone had died unexpectedly during the night, and with it, access to lots of things like banking apps! While attempts are being made to either resurrect or replace it, I tried to log on to Virgin Money on my laptop but all it does is try and direct you to the app – is there no way of managing the credit card account without this?! I could try and download it onto another device, I suppose, but will probably have to do a lot of faffing about resetting passwords.
Nope, VM and lots of other modern banks are app only, it’s ridiculous and one of the reasons why I’m closing my VM account in Nov.
@davefl, thanks – that is bonkers!
It’s the same with this SMS hell we now find ourselves in with most organisations now (apart from Amex). If your phone dies (and mine once did whilst I was travelling to london for a meeting) you’re utterly screwed. At least Amex have the courtesy to send the 2FA challenge to your email as well.
I always have a paper backup of every ticket/boarding pass when I travel after that incident. If I hadnt had a paper ticket that day I’d have had to pay virgin 200 quid to get home on a peak time train.
Phones die, sims die, sometimes you don’t have connectivity. Makes me cry the amount of times I’ve stood behind someone waiting to pay and their phone/google wallet/iphone whatever doesn’t work and they have no other means of payment.
As for VM – last year their app deleted itself from my phone for over a week, they pulled it from the Google play store because of a security incident. Denied it of course but I couldnt access my account until it reappeared and i could reinstall it.
I keep back up versions of pretty much everything and always use physical cards to pay for things, I’m quite old school! I couldn’t remember how I’d set up the Virgin cc account back at the start. Fortunately the statement doesn’t need paying for a couple of weeks, though I suppose calling them as a last resort may be a possibility! Fortunately OH is quite tecchy so is trying various interventions and has chivalrously offered to accompany me to Manchester tomorrow to get it looked at if he can’t fix it 😂
Praise be – I just found a YouTube video on how to force an iPhone to re-start and it worked! 🤣

I thought the solution to all iPhone problems was to buy a new model every year?
