Hi. looking for hotel recommendations in those 2 areas. cash or points. and any tips….
OH and I enjoyed Nomad Beach Resort last year.
Hemingways just outside Nairobi is beautiful. The Norfolk (Fairmont) and the Serena in town are also very comfortable and atmospheric.
We spent our honeymoon in Mombasa, 28 years ago! There was a lovely seafood restaurant on the water called the Tamarind, no idea if it’s still there. We stayed at a place called White Sands, it was quite basic by the standards we’ve become accustomed to since then, but I remember it has a great lagoon-style pool.
@northernlass I grew up in Kenya and remember White Sands! I always preferred Nyali Beach to Diani Beach but that’s down to childhood memories I guess! Nairobi (with the exception of the National Park which is surprisingly excellent) is not really worth too long, if you can stretch the trip to going to Naivasha would do that.
Villa Kalista in Diani is wonderful. A small complex of private villas with a shared pool. A chef prepares all your meals for you to order – amazing fresh seafood, Italian, Indian, Lebanese – whatever you like! The service is top notch and the villas are very spacious. Only downside is that the beach is very rocky. But to be honest, I don’t think Kenya has amazing beaches (at least in my experience). We have also stayed in White Sands (mentioned in the post above) – this is on the North coast so quite far from Diani and again the beach was OK but not great. Lovely pool though. The Serena properties are also good (both in Mombasa and Nairobi).
We went to Kenya in August 2023 and due to an injury we ended up spending 3 weeks in Diani beach. It is a truly beautiful place with some of the finest white sand beaches in the world. We stayed in the Neptune Palm resort which I thought was exceptional. The Nomad resort is also very good and has an on site scuba diving school which I can also recommend. Both are actually in Galu Beach which is really nice and peaceful as its just 10 minutes south of Diani. There are some great restaurants there as well for fresh seafood. One piece of advice for getting there from Nairobi is to fly to the Ukunda airstrip which is 5 minutes from the beach instead of Mombasa. We flew to Ukunda with Safarilink which is now one of my favourite airlines. In Nairobi, we didn’t stay in a hotel but can recommend ‘Cultiva Restaurant’ which was great. I would personally avoid Carnivore as there are much better restaurants in Nairobi. If you are interested in going to the Masai Mara or Mount Kenya area, I have good recommendations there as well.
@NigelHamilton – it was quite magical and we went back the following year but haven’t returned since. We did a safari quite locally (Tsavo?) and I have fond memories of staying in a lodge on stilts above a watering hole and watching the sun rise over Mt Kili.
@northernlass that was almost certainly Tsavo West (outside chance it was Amboseli but that’s much further from Mombasa). Tsavo also had an underwater viewing point where you could see crocodiles (and I think hippos) in safety. Not been to Kenya for ages but am off to Tanzania early next month for which I can’t wait!
