I was looking for a one way from SYD to EDI for my daughter for July, and occasionally flights pop up, but I know there might be availability on a different route, like SYD to Vancouver to Edinburgh……is there any way to force a different search because it seems to look only at SYD-SIN-LON-EDI
Do you mean booking with avios? You might need to search for each leg separately as BA’s IT can’t always cope with multiple sector routes like this, especially if it involves multiple carriers.

Yes Avios flights. But if I do that how would it be combined into one trip – would I need to phone up?

Yes, call to book, and it might not be bookable as one PNR even if available as individual sectors. If you can squeeze another carrier onto the booking somehow then it will price as multi-carrier, which may be advantageous.
