Am looking to fly from MNL to HKG on CX, landing at 15.05 in order to pick up our BA flight HKG to LHR which leaves around 23.30. As the BA flight is on BA 2for1 we obviously cont connect these flights together. Therefore is the amount of time we are leaving (8.5 hrs ish) sufficient in case of any delays, as far as travel insurance is concerned in case we have a delay and we need to rebook the HKG-LHR flight?
There is also another flight MNL to HKG landing 20.20 which we could get moved to if there is an issue with our original flight so we have a couple of plan B’s if needed but I just wonder if travel insurance would consider 8.5 hrs connection time enough, if there were any problems…
currently using HSBC Premier Travel Insurance who I will ring on Monday to ask the same question but just looking for any info in the meantime
thanks
All travel insurance policies will have different terms – phoning to ask is the way to go if you can’t find it explicitly covered or not in the policy document.
8 hours should be plenty if everything goes OK, but it’s clearly got a level of risk there. Worth checking if CX will through check your bags across to the BA flight – can’t remember if they do or not. It would remove the need to collect and re-check them in HKG.

Thanks Matt, very helpful re the checking bags through. Didn’t realise I would be able to do this, found the below so looks like it’s all ok. In this case will probably now go for the early morning flight from MNL landing at 10.20 instead to give more room any potential issues and also pop into the city for a few hours minus the luggage
thanks
We did exactly this trip yesterday. I can confirm that we were able to check our bags through from manilla to hkg by the cathay check in staff.
We took the lunchtime flight arriving at around 3pm ish. we stayed air side on arriving in hkg and had about 6 hours in the lounge so plenty of time!We did exactly this trip yesterday. I can confirm that we were able to check our bags through from manilla to hkg by the cathay check in staff.

Flew from MNL to HKG couple of weeks ago for 2 nights in HKG before coming home so know the cathay staff were pretty helpful but good to have first hand experience of this. thanks
Yep.All the way through from mnl to lhr
CX mnl-hkg
BA hkg-lhrTo be clear just because CX will interline your bags to your BA flight it still means you have two separate bookings and zero protections if your CX flight is late and you miss the BA one.

yes that’s understood, and is what the travel insurance is for, so I still need to contact the insurance co tomorrow to find out if 8.5 hrs connection time is deemed sufficient as far as they are concerned on non linked tickets
Hi sloth, how did this go? I’m looking at an identical itinerary for Jan 2026. We have HKG-LHR booked on with Avios via BA.com and flying on BA metal, and I’m looking to book MNL-HKG with Avios via BA.com and fly on CX metal, most likely on the same lunchtime flight as you. Did you have to combine the two bookings and pay £35pp when calling BA, or was the MNL ground staff able to interline luggage on separate Avios bookings?

You can’t combine the BA tickets HKG-LHR with the CX tickets MNL-HKG, you can only interline your bags across the two flights, but as said further up this gives you no protection from delays on your first flight affecting the second. We are also doing this journey next year and personally when we do this trip we are going to get the earlier flight in the day to give us a bit of time to pop into the city. In addition if you haven’t flown from MNL before get there nice and early as they can be very slow to process security/immigration etc when departing, it can be chaos…
Also not sure if you are aware but I’ve noticed that CX have been releasing less award seats on BA and Qatar than in previous years. Not sure if you are seeing the same for your dates? It’s annoying but seems to be the new norm for CX now. There is also diff availability via Qatar over the phone than online sometimes

Well you can, as long as there is availability (which may require married segment availability) to book both together at the same time, ie. the existing ticket for the BA flight only would be cancelled. The OP couldn’t book both flights together because their BA flight was on a 241.

Well yes as he said LHRNAIAOSL had already booked the BA flight so he can’t add the MNL flight to it…
So I don’t think travel insurance covers this scenario at all.
Travel insurance may (depending on which one you have) cover if you miss your original flight due to traffic or some other factors, but I’ve never seen anything that covers connecting flights.
If you have a through ticket then the airline is responsible for your connection and will sort you out.
If you have 2 separate tickets they MIGHT help you out, but there is no guarantee, and all risk is yours.I think it’s as simple as that.
