Interesting – I didn’t think they would have implemented in time given the early bugs. I will definitely try out some transactions when I am there and report back. On hotels, this would mean we won’t have to pay the 21% VAT (as opposed to cash transaction) so its the preferred option. Its just a case of whether you want to gamble on the large transactions.
As mentioned in that link and just checked, the MEP rate (less c.10%) is now reflected on Visa exchange rate. However, this is not reflected on the mastercard site. So I would lean towards using Visa for extra comfort. The issue is the lack of Visa cards in my wallet!
Promising this is now being implemented six or seven weeks after it was announced. Will save carrying rucksacks full of cash as we had to last year. Bear in mind WU will still be useful as I believe cash machines will still charge at the official rate and you can only withdraw fairly small sums anyway as cash machines can’t hold enough notes. Unless they have capitulated, 1000 peso was the biggest note and doesn’t get you far. They no longer have sufficient printing capacity in Argentina so are having to import notes! Also, quite a few restaurants will give decent discounts for cash.
Arriving into airport on Brazil side of Iguazu falls and need to get to the Melia on Argentine side. Will we be able to pay taxi in Real and how much should it be?
Also where is best place to get Pesos once in Argentina side?
I organised it directly with Melia for ARS45k (dec last year so take into account ars depreciation). This took me to Brazilian side of the falls then to the hotel. I also asked the driver to take me to a cambio which ended being a bit dodgy. Cambio was someone’s house with stacks of notes on the table and rate wasn’t as good as WU.
