Forums Other Flight changes and cancellations help Insurance Claim Help – Cancel and Rebook?

  • 4 posts

Hoping to summon the collective wisdom of the forum for my first topic.
Due to fly this Saturday on BA reward flight with my other half for 14 day holiday.
She’s now come down with an ear infection and got antibiotics, but doctor said not to fly until it’s better.
    We have Admiral Platinum insurance.
It could be better in time and we fly as planned, however if it isn’t it will most likely be within a few more days.
Therefore looking at options around if we need to reschedule her flight so she can still enjoy holiday even if she misses first couple of days.
For insurance, would they class this as cancellation and reimburse cost of first flight? or could I claim cost of replacement flight?
Looking at the T&Cs admiral don’t cover avios (which I should have checked before!) so seems like they would just reimburse the taxes & fees and we’d be left to cover the new cash fare for new flight?

The first thing I would be looking to do is to find out if there are reward flights a few days later. If so book them now, you cancel for free within 24 hours or for max £35 or what you paid if less. That will cover you from having to pay out for expensive last minute flights.

If you do go later would you intend returning on the original date? If so, phone BA and split the flights so that the return flight stands alone on a separate booking.

Call BA and discuss with them, they can be pretty flexible regarding medical problems. However you may still be limited by reward flight availability, so as above find out what options there are.

I can’t see a travel insurer paying for later replacement flights, that would be far too open ended. You can cancel up to 24 hours before departure for minimal cost, and that would be covered by the insurance anyway.

Of course if you think you could still go you won’t want to cancel, which is where BA may be able to help.

@IamNotLuke – I think what you are asking is whether the insurers will cover the cost of postponing the trip if that becomes necessary. Unfortunately, most insurers (with the notable exception of Amex Plat) don’t cover this situation. If you were unable to fly, they should indemnify you for any irrecoverable cancellation costs, but that’s it. In terms of Admiral not covering lost Avios, they should still provide replacement flights if, for instance, you had to return home during a trip although obviously it wouldn’t apply here.

BA can indeed be flexible but within limits they may also now require a “fit to fly” letter

Also don’t forget the hotel element of your trip!

If you cancel then the deadline to do so is 24 hours before the scheduled departure time.
