We are looking for a luxurious hotel for next June for a week in Europe.
Ideally it will be all-inclusive (purely because we are taking our son and his girlfriend and don’t want them to worry about paying for anything even if they eat without us). However it does need to be luxury – we don’t do buffets; we want lovely food, we want watersports and beach/pool. Not necessarily bothered about night life but if it’s there then they will be happy.
Having not done an AI in Europe we are looking primarily at Ikos resorts (we love Greek islands) but am totally open to any suggestions.
If you don’t want your Son to pay just add his room onto your credit card at reception and let him sign charges to your room, that way you aren’t limiting yourself to AI hotels.
We went to Ikos Dassia in Corfu a couple of years ago and it is really lovely. Nice pools and beach, a la carte restaurants (you should book these in advance) and premium alcohol included in the AI. The resort is not far from the town so it’s easy to go out and explore. The AI also includes one day hire of one of the hotel’s cars so you can spend a day exploring the island. Not sure about watersports though – they definitely had parasailing as my daughter did this. Not sure what else is on offer.
Ikos is indeed the gold standard for European all-inclusive. Since you were interested in alternatives, Daios Cove has a good reputation but I don’t know anyone who’s been.
If you insist on all inclusive, then I guess Ikos is better than some. I wouldn’t return though. I found the food offering pretty poor – the presentation was good, but the quality of the food was actually not good at all.
Thanks all for that. I think we were only thinking of AI as it allows the two of them much more freedom to come and go as they please. The other option is a lovely luxury hotel that does have great food in house/nearby and with watersports. I will have a look at what is suggested. @Lula, that is my worry – the food is a big part of our holiday (we live near Padstow/Rock so are rather spoiled here). @todareistodo he is already a sup on most of our cards so yes perhaps getting him on my Halifax clarity would be an option – any recommends?
Sorry to bump this, we are now looking at other locations, not just Europe. We love the Caribbean and yes we know it’s the start of hurricane season but we’ve done it many times.
I just feel we need to mark this date (oh 60th birthday and probably the only decent holiday with the ‘kids’).
What sort of budget are you looking at, of course the sky is pretty much the limit in the Caribbean! We’ve only done a couple, many years ago, but I think if it was a special birthday like you say, I’d go for the Body Holiday in St Lucia (if you like spa treatments and water sports/yoga/etc). Otherwise if beaches are important, look at Bahamas or Turks and Caicos.
Avios flights in CW for next summer are still available to plenty of Caribbean-region destinations as well, which would be the icing on the cake!
*In-laws have done the St Lucia one and its twin in Grenada which I think may have closed down (they used to be called Le Sport and La Source), and both times came home looking 10 years younger!
Thanks @northernlass we have done St Lucia too many times to want to go back – our favourite was EastWinds Inn which was quite fabulous. We haven’t set a budget as it really is a special birthday, we really want to get it right rather than skimp. We only opted for Europe initially as we’ve only done 14 days or more long haul but we can get our heads around a short long haul trip I guess.
We do love Antigua and Grenada (we know the old Le Sport & La Source) – we will have another look.
This has just changed today. OH has a hole in the back of his eye which will be operated on and then no flying. So earliest we can get away now is November. Increasingly looking like the Caribbean. No bad thing of course!
Sorry to hear that, it sounds very worrying. Fingers crossed he makes a speedy recovery and can enjoy a family getaway afterwards.

Thanks – his health comes first. Eyes can be funny things and I guess the recovery period is whatever it turns out to be. A trip in November will certainly be something to look forward to.
Sorry to hear that, but have you considered a luxury cruise holiday out of Southampton with MSC Cruises ?
No flying and guaranteed luxury if you book the MSC Yacht Club (their exclusive “ship within a ship” concept).
7 – 12 night cruises to some nice destinations (including Canaries & Madeira) available for June 2024.
