I’m not sure about persecuting motorists if you look at road death and injury statistics and the horrendous rise in drug driving in the past few years. Most enforcement is undertaken by local councils these days, in any case.

How do you think “changing priorities” would help in this case? Sainsbury’s remains the victim in cases where accounts have been accessed and Nectar points redeemed; the police and Action Fraud can’t act on behalf of a third party, however miffed the account holder feels about it. We don’t actually know whether Sainsbury’s even reports these incidents, so it’s a bit pointless to rail against the investigating agencies in the absence of this information.

My view is that there’s far too little Police enforcement on the UK roads. What there is is largely based around automated cameras. The roads are becoming a war zone in and around London, miscreants know there’s no Police to stop them and even if they’re reported for dangerous driving nobody will track them down. It only takes one driving holiday in Europe to see the vastly different approach adopted by overseas authorities, things like random spot checks, breathalysing drivers as a matter of routine practice, frequent radar guns while hidden in a bush and so on. It keeps people on their toes and leads to better compliance.

I think I’ve said this before but if you let the low level crimes go then society suffers as a whole and let’s be honest it’s these petty crimes that are most likely to affect our lives.

Car crime (vandalism and theft) is rarely investigated I know people that have had their headlamps stolen and thousands of £ and even car written off and the police said “call your insurance” didn’t attend don’t care and in one case it was multiple cars not just one. Have they stepped up patrols at the spots this is happening? Nope of course not.

Phone thefts are rife in London, these e-bikes are more like motorbikes travelling at high speed the users riding on pavements etc should be dealt with forget about them using them for thefts what they are doing is a nuisance and should be fined on the spot and confiscated if they can’t pay.

Same with this low level fraud. We all pay for it because sainsburys will need to pay for losses some how. Either through higher prices or fewer points offers etc

Not sure I’m for coppers hiding in bushes with radar guns lol

I can’t argue with any of that, though whether it’s possible in reality is another issue!

It may interest you to know that one of the measures police forces were compelled to adopt due to austerity cuts was the merging of departments like Traffic and Public Order (and even firearms in some areas). This means, of course, that you have a smaller unit of officers to deal with all these things, often juggling roles and carrying out tasks that aren’t their primary area of expertise. The panic that ensued when the recent riots broke out (plus governmental blustering about the capacity that really exists to deal with these things nowadays) has brought this home quite starkly.

In London part of the reason low level crime isn’t dealt with is because the Met has to cover so many demonstrations, which are very resource-intensive. The population of London has increased by nearly a million people in 10 years, while officer numbers have been reduced, the result of which is evident.

But if you don’t like the way Sainsbury’s chooses to deal with the issues around Nectar points, there are other supermarkets available!

Not blaming the police completely has 100% due to funding pressure and therefore numbers being cut but we all know how inefficient large organisations are and perhaps if they did crack down on the smaller stuff fewer serious crimes would take place, slippery slope etc.

I think Nectar could be way more secure without much trouble … they could probably implement 2FA via the Nectar app notification or send a code to your mobile that needs to be punched into the till. It’s not if they don’t have 2FA already or if it’s too hard to change tills just make it that you need to generate a redemption barcode via the app/webiste.

I don’t know how much these things cost to implement but maybe they look at how much stock they actually lose this way and decide it’s not worth it 🤷‍♀️

Any experience of how long it takes for points to be reinstated? Had £150 of points lifted last week (spent on Argos), reported on chat and new account set up but the balance hasn’t been restored as yet. They say “up to 28 days” but hopefully sooner than that!!!

@Stu_N mine took just over a week, also after being told up to 28 days.

I hope you all help to add to the statistics:

I’d be worried about what the fraud goes on to fund.

It won’t add to the statistics though. As I keep repeating, the account holder is not the victim, and it’s not even classed as a crime until someone actually redeems the points for goods, which again would be down to Sainsbury’s to report as they would be suffering that loss.

If people are bothered by the security issue, they need to put pressure on Sainsbury’s or take their business elsewhere.

Reporting this specific type of event to Action Fraud is also a waste of time because they won’t actually take any action unless there’s evidence, which a Nectar account holder is unlikely to have. All you’ll get is a computer-generated incident number which is not a crime number for the purpose of recording statistics.

Two recent articles looking at the problem which both mention that it’s not classed as recordable theft or fraud, and that any loss will only be investigated if reported by the retailer.

having done some contract work for this organisation in the past I can advise that their IT systems are not just legacy, they are just unfit for purpose.
Almost all of it is out of vendor support, and is wide open to security breaches.

factor in the limited ability of the overseas IT support, possible insider corruption, and a general lack of capital to make things any better I wouldn’t be holding a significant amount of points on the platform. Granted they seem to be acknowledging that it’s a reoccurring issue but the stress and hassle just isn’t worth it.
