Forums Payment cards American Express Keeping Amex card after 241 booking

  • 25 posts

Hi, I’ve used my 241 voucher, can I cancel my Amex card now, so I wouldn’t currently hold any amex card.

Apologies if this has been answered, I have done a search.

You can indeed cancel and get pro rata refund on BAPP. Just note it could affect your Amex friendship in future.

I think it is a simple math. You need to compare these two
    – extra 0.5 Avios you’ll make for the rest of your card year
    Vs
    – potential pro-rata refund

500 Avios for each £1k spend is valuable to me, so I never cancel even if I qualify for the voucher quick enough.

You might want to hang on to the physical card. There’s a clause somewhere that you have to show the card you made the booking with at check in, though to my knowledge BA rarely asks anyone for it (unlike some other airlines). I always take mine with me though, just in case!

Given below..I have ALWAYS checked in online prior to the airport…just in case someone gets picky. Never been asked to show it though…even though I would always close it.

Do you never have hold baggage?!

Wouldnt it suffice to show the ‘closed’ BAPP at check in? Or would they manually run it through a swiper?

That’s my assumption as it doesn’t say that the card account has to be open. I think it’s an identity thing more than anything else.
