Westin is in a good location and if it is good enough for the ASEAN Foreign Ministers, then it’s good enough for me. What you don’t see at first glance on the website is that it also has lots of villas with plunge pools. You can use Grab for all your trips and hotel has a pick up service albeit at near £30. Westin has lots of steps and you can walk up to the St Regis.
Going down into Kuah is Jake’s Charbroiled Steaks. Very nice food – thoroughly spoiled by Australian and Argentinian steaks. And everything cheaper that at the hotel. There are at least four coffee shops down at the Ferry Terminal in Kuah.
Our second stay here and plan to come back next year. Super nice staff versus going West from the U.K.
And for a direct flight, we noticed there was a LOT aircraft at Langkawi airport this morning. We had Malaysian Foreign Minister sat opposite us on flight down to KUL. Half the airport staff came out for his departure and a large gathering was in KUL for his arrival
Hi
First time visiting Malaysia so would really appreciate some advice
We have booked LHR>KUL return using Avios on BA metal
1. I will be in Langkawi on the day we return to LHR.
The flight BA34 is scheduled at 23:15 I think. What would you suggest is a safe amount of time to take the flight from Langkawi to KUL? Would a flight arriving at 19:45 give enough time? I’m thinking there isn’t much wiggle room! Otherwise there is anothe arriving 16:10 but that is quite early.2. I think if I book Malaysia air then I arrive in the same terminal as the outbound BA flight, but as all OneWorld I’m wondering if I can arrange for the luggage to be put through onto the BA plane for us so we don’t have to pick it up and check it in again? Is that possible if not on the same ticket?
Cheers
Ben

MH policy was to allow interline baggage onto BA even on a separate ticket last year, I assume nothing has since changed.

Low Cost Carriers such as Air Asia will arrive into terminal 2 which is a bit of a trek from Terminal 1 / M
Malaysia Airlines will through check your bags onto any One World airline. They state this clearly in their FAQs.Hi

Which of the two timings would you go for?

19:45 arrival or 16:10?Sorry does that also mean that they can do everything for my BA flight and I just go through to transfers? Ie don’t have to go through departures and security etc again?

If your flight from Langkawi is on MH and flight from KL is on BA then yes your bags can be through-checked at LGK. You’ll arrive into the main terminal (T1) and will need to go to the transfer desk, clear immigration, and you’ll be back in the main terminal. Long haul depart from the satellite terminal so take a bus across.

Security will be at the gate.
OK, has anyone here done BA33 / BA34 since it was resurrected recently?
Looks like it’s still a ying yang 787.Would love to hear your feedback, especially about the catering.
Am unable to locate any menus on the 2025 flyertalk thread.Long haul depart from the satellite terminal so take a bus across.
No longer need to take a bus to the satellite terminal – the train is finally working again!
Otherwise, can confirm that Malaysia Airlines continue to through check luggage across tickets to other OneWorld airlines
As requested by @BBBetter in another thread, my thoughts on Malaysian Borneo
Have visited both Sabah and Sarawak.
Sarawak – based ourselves in Kuching, a nice, sleepy town that reminded me of other parts of SE Asia from my backpacking trips in the 1990s. There’s Bako national park which is only accessible by boat, easy day trip from Kuching. Also a cultural village which I found interesting at Kampung Budaya. Many years back we visited an Orangutan sanctuary there but i’m not sure if it still exists. Excellent service in the Hilton on the club floor.
Sabah – Kota Kinabalu has easy access to the TAR marine park – a series of islands with hotels, restaurants etc on them. We stayed at the Hilton in KK, again club floor and again very good. Have also stayed at both Shangri-La properties on a few occasions as the kids have grown up. The hotels are nice, but maybe starting to show their age (even the newer ocean wing at Rasa Ria) and perhaps without the need for the kids activities now, the allure is dulled a bit further? But it feels very Westernised, so comfortable for proper down time rather than being in traveller mode.
The absolute highlight however was when we flew up to Sandakan then took a tour by Mr Aji of Aji Expeditions to Kinabatangan. It was just the 5 of us – I think they will take up to 8 – very affordable. Not lavish – infact the accommodation was properly rustic – but we were right in there with nature. Saw wild Orangutans, plus many other forms of wildlife. Sitting in a boat seeing Hornbills take off and fly when there’s literally no one else around was magical.
Combining the trips we have done, my ideal itinerary would probably be start in Kuching for a few days (an older town than KK as it was spared during WWII) then fly to Sandakan for a jungle tour of some kind, then head to the beach for a few days near Kota Kinabalu. As a creature of habit I may well plump for the Shangri La Rasa Ria – but other properties are around.
(Note the other place that seems to be good in August is around Danang in Vietnam as it has some kind of microclimate – we did that a few years back and only had 1 rain shower in almost two weeks)

SL Tanjung Aru (the one closer to the airport) is kicking off an 18 month renovation programme https://www.shangri-la.com/en/landing/tanjungaru-updates/

Good to hear that Mr Aji is still on top form
