Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points
Thinking of taking the family to Lapland next winter, kids will be 3 & 7 and looking for ideas of what itineraries other people have done. I’ve joined a load of Facebook groups but all they talk about seems to be what to wear.
Two standout options for me are Rovaniemi and Levi. Options for getting there I’ve looked at Finnair to Helsinki then either another flight or the night train. Or flying direct on easyJet/Ryanair.
Then I don’t even know where to start with accommodation or activities. Most things I read people have booked packages through a tour operator. Is this the norm for Lapland? I don’t normally book package holidays.
Would love to hear your families stories from Lapland if you have been and a ball park price. In my head I’m budgeting £6k but who knows.
TIA
We booked through an operator but stayed in one hotel. They offered a lot of activities (dog sledding is epic) and it would have been cheaper to book direct. The hotel is adults only though so would not fit you specifically. We flew to Rovaniemi from LGW which was Norwegian at the time and it was a short drive in a taxi from there.
Looking at Beana Laponia just now (adults only remember) it’s €1500 for 4 nights in February which is when we went as we wanted to stay in the height of winter.
Make sure you stay somewhere that provides all the clothing and equipment you need. It can be very cold and I doubt anybody I doubt anybody in the UK has the right clothing. Our winter coats at the time were hopeless.
Thanks @masaccio what kind of temps are we talking? I was planning on additional thermals and then ski wear. I think flying direct is probably the easiest option as you did. just have a stack of points that I would rather use.
We flew Norwegian Air to Helsinki (stayed a couple of days at Hilton Strand on points) and then on to Kittila, staying at Levi Tunturi Hotel (it has/had an indoor pool and was walking distance to the ski resort). We visited Santa and did reindeer and husky sledding. We also did 1 night in a glass igloo. Think we spent around 4000 euro for 1 week, all done independently, but this was about 8 years ago now so pricing will undoubtedly have changed! Also February, and temps were between -10C – -20C.

In February it was -20°C at times, but the humidity made it feel a lot colder. One day it got close to freezing which was starting to make the dogs uncomfortable. We only went out without the supplied clothing a couple of times – once on a reindeer sled thing where it was f’ing cold just sitting around, and once at night to watch the northern lights which was bearable for 20 minutes
