Booked a ticket in Feb 2022 to fly in Nov 2022 using the new 2-4-1 voucher and haven’t booked the return yet. When I login to manage the booking, it says date changes not allowed beyond Jan 2023. Is that just for the outward leg? Can I book the return for July 2023 when it becomes available? This will be an open jaw booking, if that’s relevant.
That sounds like BA’s usual ticket validity policy. I know some people on here have booked outbound and return legs with the 241 a long time apart but not if they had any issues. I think if you book the return leg online then reclaim the avios (unless you’re going to get gouged for US surcharges), you wouldn’t have a problem. I don’t think there’s anything in the companion voucher Ts and Cs about return dates but I don’t know how a CS agent would react to adding a sector so long after the outbound.
You can return up to 1yr after departure, so no problem for you
