Before I pay 120 quid for Annual Worldwide CDW & SLI from insurance4carhire.com, does anyone have other suggestions?

I will be renting cars in 4 different locations in Central America this summer and that 120 quid is a fraction of the saving I get by picking Hertz direct (only available with no insurance) versus packaged car hire that includes insurance.

Have you got the Amex Platinum card or are you considering getting it? The car hire insurance that’s included with the card would be fine for your situation. If you don’t have it right now, don’t forget you get a pro-rata refund on the cost of the card if you cancel, so depending when your trips are and if you would use some of the other benefits, it could be worthwhile. The Amex Platinum Hertz discount is very good generally, so that could swing it.

I have also used icarhireinsurance in the past – are they the same price?

I’ve looked a few times but I’ve always been put off by the steep fee. We don’t do many holidays where we hire a car and most recently it was the Caribbean where local agencies rule. I’m very anti chain hotel and we always fly premium cabins and/or OneWorld (I have BA Gold). So I must the the archetypal anti-Platinum customer!

Still, pro-rata refund could be interesting so I will look at that

Very similar – most companies seem to charge about 100 quid for comprehensive insurance.

I’ve used Questor for a few years. It all seems very efficient, but not had to claim yet.

    Last renewal was £55.

You can see if the Hertz prices improve with the Amex Platinum code here The 4 hour grace period might also help lower the costs and make the card worth it.

    Ta, good to know.

Guatemala City small SUV with no discount is $375 and $339 with the Amex CDP which surprisingly is more than the BA code I used to book. Or at least what I booked was $319 so I guess it’s possible it’s gone up a few $ in the past few weeks.

A bit more with CDW for me included but still cheaper than the rest so leading the pack at the moment.

@masaccio – have you tried changing your country on Hertz to see if the price improves further? Not directly related to your CDW question but may save some more cash if you are definitely going to use Hertz.

I hadn’t but VPN just now shows similar prices (wow my Spanish is rusty!) I don’t have much context for Central America but $319 for a week in a small SUV seems pretty good to me.

I might try a few random other countries if Nord has servers

@Massaccio – you don’t need to use a VPN – you can just change the country at the top right of the Hertz page. You will probably need to log in again. Someone recently got great prices when they chose Bermuda!

It is included in my curve metal benefits, but quite restrictive and you need to use curve to pay for the rental.

For vehicle hire excess insurance – Annual policy or just for trip – Bettersafe is offerimg 20% off till 8th December code “BLACKFRIDAY24”.

Dealt with them for years for car hire excess cover and happy with them – though as usual always read the small print as to scope of coverage.

Discount applies to Car Hire Excess, Private Car Excess, Home Excess, Commercial Vehicle Excess (eg if you’re using a van, which most vehicle excess policies incl Amex don’t cover).

Questor does cover some types of vehicles others don’t and are also good to deal with – I’ve been using Bettersafe for cars.

I paid about £90 for an annual policy with Bettersafe a few months ago.

I have an worldwide policy with Eversure – I paid £55.30 last year… I know a few people with them, no complaints so far

One of the things to look at is some of these policies have a “maximum car price”. This moved the needle for me to go Amex a few years ago who dont have a cap of price of rental car as we do rent SUV and higher end when travelling.
