Hi all, we(family of 4) are trying to fly out to BKK at the end of March 2026 and then home 2 weeks later from HKT.
I had to wait until my leave was confirmed so have obviously (I guess?) missed out on the 365 days before AVIOS redemption.
Seeing as BA have an intermittent (it seems!) flight from LGW-BKK, I’m looking at using QR in economy with 180k Avios + £774 for the flight to Bangkok and 200k Avios and £700 for the flight home from Phuket.
Am I missing something or is this the best bet to get a cheap(ish) flight out to Thailand & back?
We’ve only got 400k Avios & one BA Barclays Premier Account Upgrade Voucher which I think is unable to be used here.
Any other thought about how to get out to Thailand – am flexible on the outbound + – 3bdays but the kids need to be back by 14th!
Any advice to this newby very gratefully received!
TIA,
N.
Finnair also a good option if you can get to Helsinki
QR tend to charge “flexi” (i.e. double) avios on peak/school holiday dates so Finnair might be a better option as suggested.
BA’s BKK service is seasonal so ends in late March, but the reward seats go very fast anyway.
You can only use the Barclays voucher on BA flights, but you could use it, say, on a BA flight to the Middle East, then connect from there to BKK on a different airline.
The upgrade voucher would only cover 2 of you, one-way, however, so you’d need to either make up the extra avios or split cabins. Age of kids might be a factor here!
I see that the combined ‘cost’ is around £5200 if you value Avios at 1p per point, you can get flights with a few carriers for around £3k cash, you can probably get this lower when combining with a package holiday.
You’re paying £1400 cash anyway.
I realise that the value of Avios varies depending on personal preferences/circumstances but this use is suboptimal.

The Bangkok service is seasonal but didn’t finish at the end of the IATA season this year and will run through April next year as well.
That’s good news for people hoping to travel over Easter, although pretty much all the standard reward seats seem to have gone.
Thank you all – yes, probably the way I’m using is sub-omtimal but I’m trying to lessen the £££ impact of 4 of us going to the far east!
Bizarrely, the cost on BA.COM is about £250 less than booking over the phone with BA so they’re checking as to why the tax rates are so different…
