We are returning to Bali for a winter break this year after many years, so we’re fully expecting it to be a lot busier and built-up than it used to be, which made us think about splitting time between there and either Lombok or the Gili Islands.
We’d be interested to hear recommendations for either Lombok or the Gilis, ideally somewhere with a beach and a bit of local life going on, rather than a totally-remote getaway escape place.

We stayed here in a little villa type room with a pool which was pretty nice and there is a bit happening in Senggigi (albiet rather touristy!)
We took their tour down to the south Gilis which was really well organised and high quality and I remember they offered lots of other tours too including the main Gili islands. If you want to do any trekking on Mount Rijani that required at least one night away
From what I looked into at the time the other Gili islands are very overcrowded these days particularly with the backpacker crowd and accommodation didn’t look good value for money but things may have moved on since
Personally I would fly and avoid the ferries . If you haven’t booked flights yet you can book Singapore Airlines with a connection on Scoot on one ticket
Is the best One World flight routing to Lombok via Singapore or Doha?

Either to Singapore and then seperate Scoot ticket to Lombok or Qatar to Denpasar/Jakarta and onwards on a local flight/ferry
@SamG thanks a lot for that, that’s very useful. Sudamala looks decent and Senggigi seems like somewhere we’d go for.
We’re booked on Qantas/JetStar out to DPS to use points, but will book Scoot back to SIN to pick up QF2. Hadn’t thought about flying from Bali to Lombok – I guess that would cut down the transfer times somewhat?

Really depends on where you’re coming from in Bali – the traffic to the airport can be horrible if coming from Canggu / Seminyak etc. If I flew I’d do an early flight so the traffic won’t be so bad. But for me I’d do it just to avoid the boats – if you have a look around online for videos of the “fast boats” you’ll see what I mean. Also check the schedule of the boats carefully as some of them will make quite a few stops before/after yours.
I think the ferries are better but they take a few hours and that time of year the weather may not be great.
Ok so for flights we’d be looking at 1 hour transfers on either side plus 40 min flight and time needed at airport beforehand which overall does seem preferable to the fast boats as we’d need to get to/from Padang Bai and Bangsal anyway (and the Eka Jaya is full on the day we want to transfer) and we can skip a lengthy and potentially rough crossing.
