Hi there,
Apologies if this has been covered here but I just came across the forum and was looking for some advice.
To summarise, I currently have a 2-4-1 on the free BA Amex card and I also have an upgrade voucher from the Barclaycard. I also have around 80,000 Avios.
Basically I am looking to go away somewhere longhaul in Summmer 2025 and would love to be able to go business class. I know that renders my 2-4-1 useless so want to maximise the upgrade voucher. I was wondering is there anyway I could book a reward flight with the upgrade voucher to get business class and then just book a separate ticket commercially for my partner so we both get business class and have these combined as one booking?
Or if anyone else has any better advice I’d love to hear it!
Thanks.
Welcome to the forum
Unfortunately you cannot combine a reward booking using the Barclaycard voucher together with a cash booking. They will always be two separate bookings on separate PNRs (booking references)
As to how it works read this article:
As for the Amex companion voucher you don’t really have enough Avios but it might be worth doing the Avios Boost option and buying some in order to use the companion voucher. This depends on the cost of buying the Avios versus the cost of buying a cash business class ticket.
I suggest you also read this article on the Amex companion voucher
Ba blue companion voucher is no use for business. You could book a cash ticket, and separate redemption with the Barclays voucher. Would be two distinct bookings, but would work.
You don’t say where you are thinking of going but the North East of the US is 85,000 Avios off-peak in WT+ so that would be the number of Avios you would need to use the Barclays upgrade voucher in Business class (+£350 in cash). As others have said you would have two separate bookings as could not combine with a cash fare so if you wished to sit together that would cost £££.
If you scan down the below link, look at the WT+ column for Avios required (one way). Off peak is your friend if you can get it. The dates for 2025 are not out officially out yet although @lkc1977 listed the below peak dates after calling.
January 1st – 6th
February 14th – 17th and 21st – 24th
March no peak days
April 4th – 22nd
May 3rd – 5th and 24th – 31st
June every Sat & Sun are peak
July all peak after 3rd except 8th, 15th, 22nd & 29th
August all days except 5th, 12th, 19th & 26th
September all Sat & Sun
October 24th – 31st
November 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 22nd & 30th
December all after 13th except 18th
You could also keep building your balance and as others have suggested, boost the Avios. When you earn your second Avios voucher that would mean both of you could go on one booking which is simpler. Alternatively you could keep building and look perhaps to fly at some point later to the US in business class and take advantage of one of the day flights to return home where the early morning daytime Economy flight would be tolerable

those peak/ off peak dates have been very accurate so far, with the sole exception of Tuesdays in April appearing to be off peak.
