Forums Payment cards American Express Must get medical expenses approved before spend?

I notice that Amex have now switched providers.

As a result you need to register with the provider Europ Assistance.

Having done this today, I note that they say that cover is excluded where not pre-authorised.

This seems new – unless it is a mistake.

I broke a tooth today and can’t seem to figure out how to claim now.

Clicking on the various tabs says that the user is denied the use of this option etc.

    Not very helpful!

Is there not a helpline number to call for this kind of situation?

Says in the IPID the changeover is automatic and you don’t need to take any action to remain insured?

Why do you need to register?

They mean pre authorisation prior to any medical treatment. Which for dental, appears new. Phone in asap…. Best of luck with treatment. They may hope people will not notice the small print.

This was always in the rules. I have been paid when we did not follow it. Your mileage may vary.

For minor claims, like Rob I have not historically been questioned regarding preapproval. If in doubt try calling.

I’m dreading this switch as Axa has traditionally been excellent in handling claims. My Amex Benefits Centre still points to Axa’s site, with a footnote that points to a broken link for 2025 claims. Where did you manage to register for Europ? (shocking reviews come up for them with a quick google search btw…)

You shouldn’t need to re-register, my document says…

The changeover is automatic, so you will not need to take any action to remain covered by your insurance.

I think you can just call the customer service number on your Amex card ask for ‘Insurance’.

Worth noting that if you are on a dental plan with your own dentist (for example: Denplan or Practice Plan) then you may well have worldwide cover for emergency treatment included within your plan, so if you don’t get anywhere via Amex, a quick call to the plan provider to confirm what cover you have may be reassuring.

Just went into Amex Insurance to get a certificate of cover.

Although Amex stated that you don’t need to register to be covered, you do need to register to access the insurance site and link the correct Amex card, i.e. old details have not been transferred by Amex/Chubb/Axa to Amex/Chubb/EA.

Clearly best to do it before you need to do it.

The EA site seemed less clunky than the Axa one.
