Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios New Barclaycard avios plus Mastercard, can’t make online payments

I signed up for the Barclaycard avios plus Mastercard for the current bonus, and received it yesterday. It took a while to set up the Barclaycard app but got there in the end. However, I am not able to make any online purchases apart from Amazon, it seems: multiple sites have been tried and it never even gets as far as the authentification page, just the spinning wheel of frustration before getting a message to say that there’s a problem with the payment method. So can’t get a verification code sent by text, even.

Does anyone know what the issue might be? I’ve made one in-person purchase with the PIN. I keep reading about a PINsentry device, but didn’t need it for the app setup in the first place.

It’s a bit crap if you can’t start using the card straight away, no?

    Yes, a bit crap

Have you tried it in a physical shop?

Yes, made an in-person purchase yesterday, using the PIN.

Typical problem that shows your account is not properly set up and TFA fails in online payments.

Do you see all the Avios elements in the app or does it look like you have a different card?

I can see an avios section, yes. Although it doesn’t have any avios pending, which is odd given that I made purchases yesterday. Perhaps there’s a lag.

Hi, can I jump in and ask where the Avios section is? I have the android app and I have had the card a couple of weeks, but cant find the avios section, wondering if mine is not set up correctly.

Under your name on the home screen, you should see the words Barclaycard avios and what your current balance is. There’s a subtle right arrow. If you tap on the balance area, it should take you to a screen with a link to view your avios.

Ah thanks, i didn’t see the right arrow… got it now, I was looking for a button, didnt realise all I had to do was click in the area of the screen which shows the balance.

So, I rang customer service again this morning and was passed to someone in the fraud detection department (which handles these kinds of queries, it would seem). She advised that it can take up to six working days from the card application being approved before all systems are set up correctly, one of these being MFA.

So I should be able to make payments online from tomorrow, or Friday at the latest. Quite why Barclaycard drag their feet in the name of fraud prevention when, say, Amex or literally every other credit card provider I ever dealt with doesn’t, is a mystery.

It’s bizarre, isn’t it? The Barclaycard app is excellent for giving the ol’ (il)logic circuits a thorough workout!

Reminds me of the Amazon classic/platinum card issued my Newday, that people complained that their cards would be blocked “due to suspected fraud” every 1-2 purchases made.

I’m happy I dodged that bullet
