Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club No pre take off drinks ….

Whilst the ‘champagne’ isn’t of the highest quality (unless flying BA 1st) it is nice to receive a drink on boarding to while away the time. Recent JFK to LHR on AA no such luck with crew saying tight turnaround…. Despite boarding 45 mins ahead of takeoff. Me thinks cost cutting is afoot….

Not allowed to serve alcohol on the ground in the US by law, hence no champagne was served.

I don’t think this is correct.

Completely incorrect – I always have at least 2 glasses of LPGS before I take off form JFK.

AA has had longstanding trouble with pre departure service related to poor wage practices.

One thing I’m aware of is the very odd alcohol restrictions in some places. Unless it’s changed nowhere in Texas can serve alcohol on a Sunday before noon, although I’m not sure at what point Saturday night becomes Sunday. I believe it’s also true of some other primarily southern states. But the short version for the absence of pre departure drinks is usually crew related.

Another thing to note is airlines pay tax on alcohol served on the ground in the US, unlike most other countries. Often this means airlines don’t break out the expensive stuff for first class while on the ground in the US and will often serve a cheaper option (often the business champagne) until airborne. Or not serve alcohol at all in business until airborne (although this is rarer).

BA serve the good stuff in First before takeoff.

Nonsense, I came back from JFK last week and enjoyed a tipple as we waited to take off!

BA loads pre departure bubbles outside of the bonded carts and pays the tax on it
