Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios On the brink of sending back ….

  • 99 posts

I got my PIN followed by my card just under a week ago. I was able to register in the Barclaycard app, but could not see the promised chat facility. I tried calling, but the wait time was in BA territory, so I gave up.

Fast forward to yesterday: I tried using the card for the first time and it was declined twice – contactless and with the card inserted into the terminal. I gave up and used another card. I checked the app and found that it didn’t show I had any cards, so I went through the rigmarole of re-registering.

I called Barclays this morning to ask about the declined transactions. I was directed to call a fraud dept number. Whilst they couldn’t tell me what caused the flag, they assured me it would be removed. I then called back to Barclays customer service to pursue the missing chat facility (as I’m travelling soon and don’t want to spend ages on the phone when things go wrong).

This time, I was told that I should use the main Barclays app on iOS – rather than the Barclaycard one, so I registered whilst waiting for the agent and still chat didn’t appear in the new app. In the end, I waited on the line for over 50 minutes whilst the agent tried to determine why the card wouldn’t work with ApplePay. At first she said the fraud flag still seemed to be there, so she had to get that taken off. Eventually, she said that her back office people had told her that there was a known problem with ApplePay – and that “Avios are working on it” and that I’ll get a text when it’s fixed.

Colour me cynical, but I find the idea that Avios (as opposed to Barclays’ wonderful IT dept) is dealing with the ApplePay thing risible and the idea that they’re going to send a text to tell me the problem has been fixed even more so.

I’ll try another purchase, but it’s scissors time if that fails. I don’t have time to deal with such incompetence however attractive the value proposition.

    Is it really that hard?

Choose the help icon from the bottom of the Barclaycard App, then scroll down and then hit the chat button.

Thank you for your condescending advice. I am well aware how to access the chat but it is not there. Do you really think I didn’t verify with Barclays where it’s supposed to be before I posted here?

Just gone back in to check and it is there.

Maybe try a factory reset of your phone and reinstall?

I must admit I didn’t have the chat option for a couple of weeks after I opened my Barclays account (January). I’m not sure if it was down to the fact it was a new account or the chat lines were too busy so didn’t offer me the option? 🤷‍♂️

Barclays confirmed to me in writing that the avios cards don’t work with Apple Pay at the moment

relation to Apple Pay. Unfortunately at the moment the new Avios card doesn’t support this feature”

Hilton Barclaycard works fine with Apple Pay for me. It’s just my Avios Mastercard that can’t be added.

Contactless is only enabled after your first chip & pin transaction, according to the blurb that came with the card. Try it directly in the chip & pin terminal next time and see if that works.

Thank you all. Perhaps the chat function will eventually appear – there seem to be other ‘features’ that are not available in the app that do explicitly say they’ll be activated over a few days.

C – I did try the card in the chip and pin terminal first (as instructed). It wouldn’t work that way and also didn’t work when I tried contactless so I gave up.

u07ch – The response you got about ApplePay explains why it won’t work. It doesn’t explain why Barclays can’t train its frontline staff.

Okay sorry, doesn’t work with Google Pay only then.

This is expected. Only Apple Pay is supported for Barclaycard. You’ll need to use their own app for Android devices.

Time to dig out my Curve card (if and when Barclaycard send me my card).

In case anyone’s interested, chat HAS now appeared in my Barclays app – so it’s a matter of being patient. Payments using the card seem to be working as well.

Apple Pay doesn’t work at all for my corporate Barclaycard, only my personal non-Avios Barclaycard. So what’s chapter and verse for the Avios B’card – does it work or not?

I was only thinking of the personal cards when I said that. Yes, according to Barclays, they don’t support commercial cards with Apple Pay unfortunately.

Barclays have said it’s a known issue with the Avios cards at the moment, and they’re hoping that it’ll be fixed next week.
