I could have posted this in any forum tbh.
One way long haul flights are priced crazily expensive. Is there any way to get a good price for a one way flight to the UK e.g. New York to London?
I know an Avios redemption is one option. But there is no ability to use either an Amex or Barclaycard voucher as the flight has to start in the UK? I am unfamiliar with Virgin but it appears that voucher has the same T&Cs?
Otherwise is the only other option a “low cost” carrier like Norse?
One-way long-haul flights are usually disproportionately expensive on traditional carriers like BA, which makes using avios extremely convenient and a great deal. You can use the Amex voucher starting outside the UK now, this changed a couple of years ago (definitely the BAPP one, anyway, you might need to double check if it’s the free one). Virgin voucher can be used from anywhere, as well.
My preferred option here would be to try and book the 8 am departure from JFK in economy for 25k avios plus £50 – it’s a short enough day time flight to be tolerable in this cabin!
Book a return or open jaw and plan to not use the return (but it may come in useful), look into skiplagging / hidden city / fuel dumping but that comes with risks if using US airlines, less so on BA
Three options –
1. Norse or jetBlue (or even Level via Barcelona, PLAY through Iceland if you are price conscious)
2. Redemption flight if you have enough miles anywhere
3. If you need to return to the US in the next 12 months, book the flight there as the other half of this ticket
I remember looking at this a while back, trying to find a flat bed home after using Barclay upgrade voucher outbound from UK. Best I found was TAP via Lisbon, one way. (Might have been separate ticket onwards to LHR) Didn’t end up flying the itinerary though, in preference to an ex-EU open jaw for not much more.
Always a proponent of the daytime flights home from the US though, so would also echo NorthernLass’s suggestion in an economy seat. (I’d recommend Main cabin extra on AA)
Good luck!
I keep forgetting AA have a day time flight from JFK, though I seem to recall that surcharges might be quite high as of course there’s no RFS. Also you can’t use a 241.
You can also use avios quite reasonably on Aer Lingus, and IB (via MAD).
Aer Lingus via Dub too. They don’t rip you off on a one way cash itinerary. Done it several times.
I will squirrel away that nugget, @davefl!
I’ve had it as low as 800 euro back from Chicago on a throne seat.
13k with Aer Lingus to DUB in Y.
17k with IB to MAD in Y.
And the great 25k one NL mentioned above.
10k and $153 (20k peak) on virgin, day flight also available.
JetBlue now also do a daytime flight from the US, it was reviewed on here the other week.
