Forums Other Destination advice One week in Greece at the end of June

We will be in Athens at the end of June and have a week to spare. We haven’t been in Greece before and prefer nature, culture and food over beaches. Any recommendations? Maybe visiting two Greek islands that are not too far away from Athens.

If you’re going to visit the Parthenon while you’re in Athens, check the opening times and get there as soon as it opens in the morning – and take water!!!! By the time you climb the hill to the top you’ll feel like you’re melting.

There are 7 islands close to Athens and plenty of companies doing day trips to 2-3 of them where you get to spend an hour on each. You’re not going to find a huge amount of culture on the islands apart from the Temple of Aphaia on Aegina so you may want to get the ferry and spend a couple of nights on Aegina. Then you could take ferries from there to the other islands such as Hydra and Poros and eplore them.

From Athens take a day trip to Delphi and a sunset trip to Cape Sounion for culture, or rent a car and do them yourself and stay near Delphi for a night as it’s a long way from Athens.

Hydra is beautiful and could be combined with Spetses. Neither have cars.

I haven’t been to the mainland near these islands but there must be ancient sits there so you could take a water taxi or small ferry across.

This should give you some ideas https://www.likeachieff.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/amanzoe-activities-june-2016.pdf

You can try visiting Nafplion which has a lot of history (First capital of modern Greece) and nice views from the top of the hill.

For islands you can try Aegina, Hydra and Spetses

You will struggle to find nature around Athens. Delphi is a must visit site (2.5 hours drive) but you need to rent a car and be ready for some interesting driving due to roads. Go for fish in Itea afterwards at the seaside restaurants.
