Am passing through Paris with the family next week. We arrive on Eurostar at 22:20

I’m thinking that just about gives us enough time to get to the Eiffel Tower to see the last light show (teenagers & instagram – sorry) if we go by car. Can someone confirm that?

We then need to get along to Gare de Lyon where our hotel is (because we have a train out of there the next morning).

If a car will get us there in time, am I better off booking a car & driver for a couple of hours (expensive but convenient) or will the time taken in finding the driver and getting to the car take too long? Just mindful that if we take a regular cab, I’m going to be left corralling family and a bunch of carry on bags…

And obviously if it’s a resounding “don’t be stupid, man, you’ve got nowhere near enough time” I’m all ears for that as well and we can just head straight to GdL.

    Thank you

It is tight as the last show starts at 2300 IIRC. And there are lots of moving parts like weather and traffic and possible Eurostar delay.

If you think you can be seated on a cab around 2235, I’d say go for it. Otherwise you may need to settle for less and just drive to pont de la Concorde or similar to catch the last glimpse.

If you’re travelling on Monday 20 May, be aware it’s a public holiday in France and much of Europe.

Make sure you book seats as close to the front of the Eurostar as you can (carriage 18?) as the train is long and that’ll save you a few mins. It’s tight, particularly with luggage for something you might miss so given the hour and expense of booking a driver, I’d just go straight to the hotel. Don’t suppose you’re going through Paris on the return?

I should have added that if you must do the tower, you can get the metro line 6 afterwards to Gare Du Lyon and if you go from Passy/Trocadero, you get to go over the Seine opposite the tower which is (mildly) interesting.

How can one ever forget that view. I used to live in the 15th and took that metro line everyday to and from work.

Thanks all. We are pretty close to the front of the train. Must admit I’d rather just get over to gare de Lyon pronto.

And we are flying back from the South of France. Just taking the train down and as the costs add up, I’m wishing I’d just ponied up for expensive bank holiday weekend flights when they were “only” £250 each in Y. It’s been a false economy for sure. I guess the journey can be part of the adventure or something 😆

I have a couple of clients currently in Majorca, they don’t fly so £2k to get there and back on the train, albeit that includes 2 nights in Barcelona, Montpellier and Paris on the way back, so should be a great trip. But catching the train to the South of France is usually cheaper than flying at peak times. Scenery lovely south of Lyon too.

For the 4 of us, we’re up to £1200 including trains with civ protection from our local station, standard premier to Paris, 1st class to Antibes and 2 rooms in a reasonable hotel in Paris. That’s one way.

I’ll look forward to that scenery!

You’re keeping us all in suspense! I’m still with you close to the front of the train arriving at GdeN! Did you get to the Eiffel Tower; did you see the light display; and did the teenagers get their insta photos?

Hate to break it to you @LD27 but you’ll be left on tenterhooks for another few days yet…

    Will report back.

Oh we’re in carriage 14, with 16 being at the very front.

Oooh. Yes. Left on tenterhooks and biting my nails! My daughter often visits Paris for insta photos and definitely no longer a teenager! I now refuse to go with her. If we travel together I visit friends and she goes off alone!

For those of you who I am sure haven’t slept a wink all week, we made it to the tower with 3minutes to spare – but also arrived into GdN 5 mins early.

Boxes ticked, dad points earned and now en route to the hotel.

    Thanks all!

Delighted you made it with boxes ticked and lots of Dad points. Hope you enjoy the rest of your holiday.
