Forums Frequent flyer programs Other frequent flyer schemes Popular travel YouTuber banned from Qatar Airways

Considering the amount of coverage Qatar Airways gets on HfP I’m surprised this isn’t already being talked about on here. (Or is this story being silenced here too?)

Josh Cahill was banned from Qatar Airways for leaving a flight review they didn’t like…

I saw it yesterday, as much as it surprises me, it doesn’t. I don’t think it’s being talked about here because they’re not a UK based person, it’s not virgin or BA and the target audiences aren’t aligned

Josh seems genuine. Sadly I am sure Qatar Airways did everything he said.

Though I did note the little sideswipe at Sam Chui, near the beginning, with some amusement.

This is why it’s really scary that Qatar owns so much of the UK now. Companies, real estate, and I’d guess politicians and other people as well.

Someone mentioned it the other day but there wasn’t any engagement.

Like @SSS it doesn’t surprise me.

I’d be interested to see if he could manage to fly to Doha on a QR flight booked via BA with a BA flight number and indeed what might happen if he just flew to Doha (e.g. with BA on BA metal) as he isn’t banned from Qatar the country. I suspect that would be a high risk thing to do.

Totalitarian states gonna totalitare. it’s just how it is. It’s fine until it isn’t fine. And then it can be really, really bad very quickly.

I have a former colleague who has banned his team travelling to China (and this includes Hong Kong) because they have published some honest views on China. You can question whether this is overkill or not but totalitarian states gonna totalitare!

Josh Cahill must be delighted. Think of all the clicks.

This is a biggie. Banning due to not liking a review is just unacceptable.

Firing the crew as well because they allowed the filming is also shocking.

Has it actually been substantiated that the crew was fired? It also apparently happened under the previous CEO, last August, so one would hope they have entered a new era!

Is there a text version of this? A 20 minute video to tell a story that can no doubt be read in two is the very worst of the Internet.

It has been mentioned on the bits article. There’s a long thread on FT Qatar forum about it. He’s not my cup of tea, way too negative and I just don’t like him he seems to love courting controversy. As to whether the crew have been sacked unless one of them comes forward who knows. But I wouldn’t be surprised if they had been. They aren’t dealing with a company that has a union or a country with fair employment laws. There’s plenty of comments and stories from crew (allegedly ) telling us about the bad working conditions, again whether true or not who knows.
I think he loves the drama and the airline from publicity point of view have handled it badly. If they had just ignored him and his review it would be finished with now.

Whether or not the crew have been sacked the amount of people coming out with stories of how they’ve been treated as staff make me never one to spend a single pence on Qatar.

It’s a good summary, along with a plausible explanation of how an executive level JFDI might have caused this

    Joshy-boy getting a fair shakeup.
If you like to read fanboy talk go to his YT channel. They are all drooling all over the story and how bad this and that is.

Somewhere in the middle may be the real essence of the “story”.

I for once welcome that an airline stops on of those influencers that made may past flights dreadful…..aka their camera clutter, forced privilege for b-roll, being noisy
…lets not talk about their carbon footprint for all this useless flying. That is all the rage, isn’t it.

The is roughly what every Youtuber does to generate engagement. That is how they make a living. That and gear up outrage about he said/she said.
That Josh guy is famous for this.
I am baffled that he lasted this long.

He clearly does not have a clue how the ME works and if you shame/blame publicly a staff member (damaging their honor) you better never come back to the country. Sth very unpleasant may wait for you at the security checks.

He is out for the quick bucks, w/o maintaining a business relationship. Any decent business owner knows how the game is played. This guy however, although doing Youtube since 2017, has not not learnt/knows a thing.

While I do use Heathrow and BA and I know Qatar benefits indirectly, I steer well clear of flying Qatar for the same reason I avoid Dubai – they’re much more intentional choices.

I mean there is a massive difference between not inviting someone to a party (sorry press event), and banning them from your airline as a paying customer. Middle eastern countries have very different legal standards, I doubt Josh will ever visit Qatar again. He’s a genuine flight reviewer and I love his videos, suppose it’s always been a risk

(Side note: got A 320 post here, lol)

This happens in a lot of industries, not just airlines. Banning someone from actually buying/using the product is pretty extreme though.

His report of the crew was scathing.

He didn’t care about the consequences or the crew welfare when he was making sweeping comments that someone “should be well rested after 24 hours in Sri Lanka and be happy to come to work” and that they were “cold” and “turned their backs” etc

And now all of a sudden, he cares about their welfare?

Surely if the crew was as bad as he said they were, then he shouldn’t be at all bothered about their dismissal.

    Yes.

No different from any other mass-market media – the fundamental business model is that they tell harmful lies to enrich themselves, and in the process poison the well (of “high trust society”) from which we all drink.

Qatar is authoritarian but they are not totalitarian. There are not many totalitarian states in existence today – North Korea, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan under the Taliban, perhaps Syria. The total control over all aspects of society in a totalitarian state goes far beyond the likes of Qatar and current day China for example.

While that’s not the same as this case (or at least as this case is presented) it still means that you can’t fully trust reviews of those brands – what’s being ignored to maintain access to the media events?

His job is to do an honest review. He’s good at it too, Josh also praises people when it’s due which is why I’m a fan.

He also does a good job of presenting the crews side of the story, tough curfews, continued working through covid and much more. Is it a surprise they don’t really want to work their anymore?

Josh Cahill is not a shill like many other airline vloggers seem to be.
He is pretty honest and criticises airlines when there is a need instead of going all Sam Chui and pretending there are no issues.
My only gripe with his videos is he does go on and on a bit and could make his point in half the time.

There needs to be more reviewers like Josh, and less (ideally none) like Sam Chui.

@SSS – the trouble is that the references to QR crew conditions are not placed in any context. The conditions and restrictions placed on ‘guest’ workers are not exclusive to QR; it’s an issue right across the tourism/hospitality sector in the ME.

Airlines and hotels etc. supported by their governments, take the view that they pay and they set the terms. The social and workplace rights we take for granted in Europe are non existent. Staff willingly accept such oppressive terms because they need the money and as long as you play by the rules, all will be fine.

I’m not going to make any travel decisions based on this person’s or any other vlog/blog because they aren’t serious, but I understand why QR is upset and don’t want him on their flights because the company has been very unfairly singled out.

If you actually watch his videos you’d know that he criticises other airlines.
