We are looking at a week in Portugal in mid June. Preferably a BA holiday. I know nothing about Portugal and neither does the other half. What I need out of it is a decent hotel, (without kids preferably, but this shouldn’t be much of an issue in June) and on a really good beach with water that’s suitable for swimming in the sea as I’m not a big fan of pools.
A town nearby would be good but not essential. Found a couple of nice hotels on BA holidays last night but when Googling reviews they all mentioned being ruined by a rave festival happening on the beach last June and the resort itself being touristy and tacky. Put me off.
Any ideas of where might fit the bill?
Where in Portugal are you looking? I’d recommend Estoril as it has a great beach and is not far from Lisbon so you have the benefit of visiting the city too.
My only concern would be the sea isn’t exactly warm given it is the Atlantic.
Otherwise head to the Algarve where the water is warmer (that’s relative though as it’s still not the Mediterranean though)
Can’t recommend any hotels as I haven’t stayed in either place, I just stay in Lisbon and go on day trips

This is the problem, I don’t know where to look. I’m thinking The Algarve as I’m a cold water wuss and need the sea as warm as possible (for June).
We had a nice stay at the Sheraton Pine Cliffs around that time of year.
Steps down to a beach, a few places to eat/supermarket within walking distance, though
preferable to have a car to make the most of cute daytrip places. There will be
some kids as Spanish and Portuguese schools will be on hols by then.
Having said that, the sea temperature in the Lisbon area is only a couple of degrees cooler.
Cascais is also v nice, with a pretty albeit small beach. Direct transport to Lisbon/Sintra, etc.
And having said THAT, I agree with @Aja in that a stay in Lisbon with daytrips is a great option.
Have a look at Costa Caparica for beaches.
Further up the coast are the miles-long beaches of Nazaré and Figueira da Foz.
Hard to have a bad time, really!!
Vilamoura is nice, we go there a lot, in fact booked my son and wife reward flights yesterday for their anniversary, and we are going in October. My Son says the Conrad is nice not so many children I’ve stayed Tivoli Marina Vilamoura Algarve Resort which I really liked, for me with mobility problems it was so close to nice restaurants and the beach, I do believe it’s having a refurb now. Son says the spa at the Hilton is fantastic if that’s important to you. There’s lots of high end hotels if that’s what you are looking for. You can get BA flights from LHR or LGW.
Avoid the first week in June as that’s UK half term!
If you are indeed a “cold water wuss”, I can’t see how you’ll enjoy Portugal. We were in the Algarve a few years ago in late August/early September, the sea water was rarely above 22C. June will be even cooler.

Yes, it’s the Atlantic Ocean not the Med and can be quite rough, I do believe they hold the surfing championships which show you how rough seas can be.
