Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios Purchasing a car – Barclaycard Avios or?

  • 12 posts

I’m buying a brand new car from the dealer. I’m buying it cash because I don’t want to pay an interest and they already provided a discount regardless of financing method

They accept up to 5k in non amex credit cards. I was thinking of paying 5k with barclaycard avios plus and rest bank transfer

Is there a way to generate more miles or cashback?

Even if you don’t need it, did you check if a financing agreement could be paid off over very few months, at up to 5k per month assuming card could be used? Seller earns commission/meets targets if finance agreements taken, this can help their willingness to negotiate price so wondering if there is a deal doable there.

@LL has a good point, most finance companies take credit cards – we paid off one of our cars over 3 years with the monthly payment and final balloon payment all being paid on points-earning cards. Of course you can pick a shorter duration, and most agreements let you pay it off early as well.

Curve: pay your £5k on credit card, and the rest on curve. I pushed a very large chunk through that way a couple of years ago (on 2 cards, on 2 separate days to get around the daily limit that was in place at the time). Dealer was initially slightly disbelieving, but once I showed them that curve has “debit” stamped on the back they were fine with that approach.

Depends on daily Curve limit, as you say.

In case it’s a factor, with curve you lose S75 protection

Only if you don’t pay any of the transaction directly. Paying even 1p (directly) with a CC would give you S75 protection, so long as the cash price isn’t above £30k.

If use Barclaycard to pay £5,000 I would not pay remainder by bank transfer better to pay by your bank card & have some protection – know that’s not what your asking

I spoke with Toyota Finance regarding the same and they came back with this……

Regarding your deposit – you will have to speak with the dealership as this depends on them.

You can ring us every month to make the payment manually using a credit card.

We will not charge you but we would advise to contact your card provider to ensure they will not add on any extra charges for doing this.

You can make the final payment using a credit card, again, we will not charge you but we would advise to contact your provider to ensure they will not add on extra charges for doing this.

We do not accept American Express credit cards.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

As other people say, you just need to pay 1p to get protection. But the car needs to be less than £30k, otherwise it’s irrelevant if you pay by card or not.

Santander and VW finance allow payments as per @PJJ’s post above (though Santander accept online credit card payments so you don’t have to call). Alphabet finance, used by BMW, accept all credit cards, including Amex.

Ok, looks like S75 is not applicable anyways given car is above 30k

In that case, is there even a benefit of paying the balance above 5k by debit card as opposed to bank transfer?

Noted on the financing by using credit card. But need to calculate the cost of interest vs avios earned. For example, if you take a 45k financing and pay it over a short period of time, say you pay 500 in interest. You end up buying 67.5k avios for 500 (assuming barclaycard or ba amex pp used) which isn’t too bad but it’s not a bargain either

There’s no additional dealer discount for using financing. Dealer already made a generous discount which will not changed no matter how I finance the car

The finance option was just suggested as a way to earn more avios. Also, you could theoretically split the payments over several cards, if you and a Player 2 has any or all of them, and earn 2 companion and 2 upgrade vouchers.

Last year we finished paying the finance on one of our cars, plus paid the £12k balloon payment, and as well as earning a chunk of points triggered the Barclaycard and Virgin vouchers.

If your debit card is a Curve, you’ll get points. That’s the only benefit as far as I can tell.

Curve is so unreliable and unpredictable that I dont wanna risk it

The last thing i wanna see is a 3% charge on a massive amount because suddenly barclaycard decided to classify car purchases under a different category

I still have curve legacy black and occasionally use it abroad but i really cant rely on it. Simply far too many things have gone wrong with it

I paid close to the credit limit on 2 Barclaycard Avios cards last week when we bought a car, no additional charges. Both transactions went through immediately, despite them being well out of character for my typical spend.

Has anyone ever brought a used car with Big Motoring Wold via curve? The online refundable depo took my card, but I don’t know if it counts towards my fronted allowance, so thought I would check if anyone has any experience.

Assume you had fronted on before payment? Did it not work without it?

I leave fronted on all the time, didn’t think to turn it off before paying… But good point, if I do decide to buy the car, I could turn off fronted and see if it goes through! Thanks!

Simple – just turn off fronted in the app. Zero risk of 3% charge.

I did almost exactly the same just last year. Same with my dealer, he was very doubtful until he saw the debit label. It was a monster avios earning month…

I’ve bought 3 cars using my Barclaycard Avios Plus in the last 18 months, totalling c.£160k, and for exactly the same reason the OP has said regarding finance rate competitiveness. On 2 cars (same dealer), they would take <£5k on Amex, but any amount on Mastercard or Visa. The second dealer would not accept Amex at all, but would take it all on Mastercard.

For the first car, it was all straight forward, except my credit limit meant I had to debit (credit limit minus £1k) then pay it off the next day etc. I did that several times. The second car was within my limit so straight forward.

The third car was the same as the first except Barclays changed the rules to cap miles earning to a max of 3 times my credit limit, so I had to schedule payments across two billing months to not lose any miles.

Unintended, but very helpful, upside for me was that when BA ran the ‘purchase Avios based on annual spend’, it arrived just as I ‘needed’ a large amount of Avios as cash tickets were stupidly expensive. Because I had amassed so many Avios, I could buy what I wanted and saved a bit more.

Whatever you do, good luck with the car and purchase options.
