Arriving at Faro Airport 7pm tonight so will post an update on if the eGates are open and how I get on

Took me 2 hours at OPO 2 weeks ago. None of their e-gates were active for any passports. Was travelling with those arriving at different times and the wait seemed to vary significantly/

Left via LIS earlier this week and could see the arrivals hall and it looked horrific.

Possibly they have installed new e-gates everywhere and none of them are active yet?

The e gates at OPO have been there for 4+ years and I have never seen them working in the many many times I have travelled through that airport. OH has seen them open/working once in that time.

The e-gates at Faro are rarely in use, even for Portuguese citizens.

Even if they are brought into use, they won’t make much difference to the processing time, as an Immigration Officer will still have to examine the passports of non EU Citizens to check compliance with the 90 day rule. This will not change until the Entry/Exit System (EES) goes live. This was originally scheduled for 2022, but keeps slipping. The latest estimate is October 2025.

The problem is not only queueing to get into the EU at Faro. You have to queue to leave as well. Queues to leave have also been around two hours at times, and people have been missing flights as a result.
