I’ve just been looking at two tickets LHR – ATL in November. The flight is on an A350-1000, this means it definitely has the new Upper Class, right? When I look to choose seats, 1D says “not available for selection”, whereas 1G is available. I’m confused, as I thought Retreat Suite couldn’t be booked until 2 weeks before the flight, so now I’m doubting if it’s the new setup at all?

Very little about VAA relies on the 72 hour window. Specifically, I think it’s only special assistance, Meet and Greet, PCR tests etc. (which has mostly disappeared) and points allocation. Retreat Suite has always been within two weeks of departure.
BA is much more reliant on it, usually when it comes to seating given how their integration in Fly with Altea theoretical seating works. Essentially, the 72 hour window is to give the vast majority of elites of any kind the ability to choose their preferred seats first, which is important for them as there are significantly more BA elites than VS.
