We have a mystery – well to us anyway! My daughter is booked on an avios reward flight tomorrow from LHR to ORD with BA. It was definitely booked as an economy seat but on check in it is labelled as world traveller plus and she has a WTP seat. The same happened with her partner last week (same flight a week earlier). The reward flights were booked on 27 December 2023.
Is this an IT glitch or BA generosity?
Probably neither a glitch nor generosity. The thought is that BA sometimes allocates upgrades if it thinks it can get you hooked on the relative comfort such that you choose to pay for it in the future.
I would expect the upgrade to stick. Did her partner end up travelling in WTP+?
Thank you Zio – yes he did. Only his second flight ever, the first being to the UKon a BA reward flight. You could be right as my daughter usually travels with AA so has no track record with BA. BA may be disappointed when mum doesn’t pay for WTP!
Our daughter – travelling by herself when c20 years old – got upgrade from economy to Club World from Denver to London. Perhaps because on the way out the flight was late and her suitcase didn’t arrive for two days?

That’s definitely not the reason. BA doesn’t do thst sort of upgrade to make up for a late flight etc.
The BA algorithm kicked in and she was lucky.
We wonder whether something happens at the 24hrs ahead mark. Up to then her booking was showing WT. then suddenly 23hrs 45 mins to go it’s WTP. Perhaps the other reward seat in WTP was not booked (or the customer was upgraded to a spare CW rewards seat) and defaults to another reward customer? Tuesday middle of day is unlikely to be busy – hence cheap reward flights in the first place

Yes, lots happens in the hours prior to online check-in opening. There is human intervention to sort out, to the extent possible, families sitting together, infants/bassinets in the right place, overbookings upgraded or downgraded etc.
A stroke of good luck! I’ve never been upgraded by BA in 20 years, despite having had two spells as Silver with the soft landings to Bronze thereafter and I seldom fly in Business except when I’m seeking to collect TPs (always on short haul).
@Londonsteve yours is a flight pattern which shows BA it doesn’t need to try harder via upgrades.
I have only had one upgrade, JNB-LHR, but that was at the gate. I have never put enough money BA’s way to achieve status.
