Forums Frequent flyer programs Virgin Flying Club Reward Voucher Redemption in UC for Red Member P2 is not 50% it’s more?!

  • 103 posts

I’m horribly confused by the Reward Voucher redemption system, despite the wording on the website being clear – Red member gets 50% reduction in the points required when booking Upper Class for the second seat. So not quite the 2-4-1 I’m used to with BA, but not bad.

I rang Virgin, and was told no, for the flight I have in mind (LHW – DBX) in late January it’s 75k points for me and 1/4 i.e. 18.75k points for the companion. There’s no availability for Jan ’24 anyway but I’m looking ahead to Jan ’25 and trying to plan the points required accordingly. The call handler was definite and I didn’t have the t&c’s to hand. Having looked again at the t&c’s it clearly says 50% – so I rang back and the second call handler confirmed what the first said – it’s not 50% but a manual calculation, and using the same flight confirmed the 18.75k.

Given the wealth of knowledge and experience on this forum can anyone shed any light on the divergance from the call handlers information to the written word?

The bottom line is I don’t want to overstack the Virgin account with miles that I’d rather have as Avios, but do want to use the voucher which expires early March ’25.

Unfortunately I can’t edit the title which on re reading suggests the discount is less than 50% whereas what I actually mean is the discount is more than 50%. Perhaps I need a lie down!

I’m not 100% sure which airports you’re referring to, but could the agent have been calculating it as 2 upgrades rather than a 2-4-1? It’s my understanding in any case that you get better value from upgrading 2 pax rather than using the voucher as a 2-4-1 (unless you have a certain status).

@DJP31, hopefully I don’t confuse matters, but it appears the 75,000 points relates to return flights (Heathrow to Dubai then Dubai to Heathrow) in Upper Class for one passenger (i.e. you) during the off-peak period, but I wonder if the agents quoted you only for one way for the second passenger, hence 18,750 points rather than 37,500.

My fat fingers – LHR to DBX. Maybe that’s what they did. All I said was I had a reward voucher and was trying to work out what the points cost was.

@NorthenLass, firstly apologies for the hopeless attempt at using the airport codes. I should have stuck to Heathrow & Dubai. Anyway, I’ve finally understood it – and your understanding is correct. As a Red member (lowest of the low) if I book an Upper Class ticket then my companion gets priced at the Premium points. Both charged Upper Class taxes. This indeed works out cheaper than 2 pax being charged 50% of my points cost.

    Thanks for your help!
