I’m Gold and booked Qantas business Sydney to Brisbane paying by Avios. I’ve tried manage my flight for seat selection and all I get is ‘seat choice at check in’. Anyway around this?
Thanks in advance
Are you trying to select your seat on the BA website? You can’t but it should work on the Qantas website, assuming you mean you are BA Gold
Yes BA Gold. The Qantas website says check with your travel agent! The BA app says at check in and the BA website doesn’t even mention seat selection on the Manage My Flight.
We are a family of four blue members and flew Qantas ADL-MEL return in April. We booked on ba.com using Avios. I was able to select seats for the four of us in the Qantas app or website (can’t recall which). Also, when sat in the airport I could have changed the seats prior to boarding.
Did you book it right before posting this thread? I recall that sometimes I’ve had to wait a day or so after booking before it would let me choose seats. Has the booking been ticketed?
Seat selection is free for anyone on Qantas domestic flights. As @John says, your ticket has to actually be issued first, and then there can then be a slight delay in being able to book your seats on the Qantas web-site.
The message ‘seat choice at check in’ also comes up if a threshold of assigned seats has already been reached. This can happen quite quickly in Business as there are a very limited number of seats and most of the people travelling will probably have some kind of elite status. Even if this case, you would normally be able to put in a preference for an aisle or window.
Qantas also block some seats for the highest elite status holders. I don’t know if Qantas FFs are given priority over their equivalent status FFs but I suspect they may be, and their Chairman’s Lounge members almost certainly would be. The blocked seats are often released sometime after T-80 (80 hours before scheduled flight departure).
As you probably know, you will have access to the Qantas Business lounge in Sydney, both via BA Gold and travelling in Business, although it isn’t that brilliant, so don’t use it to judge the quality of Qantas lounges. If you are returning from Brisbane, the Business lounge there is very much nicer.

This is the message I get. Oh well it’s not the end of the world, just annoying
