Forums Payment cards American Express Shop Small is back! With no cashback?

  • 144 posts

I just got an email from Amex about this year’s Shop Small. There is no mention of any cashback on purchases, just encouragement to support local small businesses – all very laudable but hardly a massive incentment.

The T&Cs mention the cashback but refer to the 2022 campaign.

It was on two of my card right now.

I don’t see the offer on either of my cards.

P2 has the shop small (up to 3 times) on gold card and up to 1 time on the platinum. Dates are as above.

Well, you have 6 days remaining then, which can’t be correct. I think the dates are much more likely to be 18/11/2023 to 15/12/2023

Shop Small 1 time? Seems rather stingy. So I get no times, you get 1 time, they send an email out 3 weeks after the launch and don’t mention any money off in the email.

I’m still very confused. HfP normally trail Shop Small weeks before.

Have the same on gold (3 times).
Posted in the chat about it a few weeks ago to say the same: Quietest Shop Small launch ever 😂

But it is hard to get excited about.
    I’ve used it once, accidentally.

So as always, I had some trouble with the offer.

One purchase on the Friday (@ a pub) posted the following day.
A purchase at a take away (on the Sunday) didn’t post any credit however.

Followed it up to see when it would post, and they pulled this little T&C out of the bag at me

Even though the charge has been applied to your statement for the 3rd December, it posted to your account on 4th Dec. As per the offer terms, Qualifying purchases must be billed to your Card Account by the Offer End Date.

    They’ve given me a £5 goodwill gesture 🙄

I have 2 out of 3 posted (out of a potential of 4 transactions, only 3 credits as per T&Cs of offer). I will wait a bit longer and see. Every year at least one does not post. Every year I put a complaint in. Usually it is sorted, but last year I had to go to the ombudsman following a particularly idiotic response. Won my £5 plus £50 compensation. And Amex will have paid the £750 case fee.
I have all the details for another ctrl+c ctrl+v this year if they try the same again.

Do you feel the Ombudsman was worthwhile?

A good question, always worth considering. Do we just let the big guy win because it is not worth pursuing?
Because their response to my complaint was quite inflammatory, and blamed me for not checking the branding of the machine I was using to pay did not match the ‘shop small’ stickers in the window, then I think yes. Took me 5 mins to fill out. Will have taken the adjudicator 20 mins to resolve, so one of the easier cases they make a ‘profit’ off.
In the end, hopefully pushes Amex to actually provide good customer service in future.
