We are looking to book a flight from MAN-LHR-HKG then back. The shortest transfer time is 1h10min at Heathrow for both way. As this will be our first time transfer at Heathrow, Will that be enough time to pass the security and passport control?
Thanks
Your answer is Yes/No/Maybe, how long is your piece of string today.
Outbound, how late is the Man=LHR because it typically is. How long do you have to wait after landing before LHR control allocates you a gate. How long is the bus ride from the plane to the terminal when it eventually turns up.
Coming back.. how long is the immigration queue, how long is the security queue and did you land at T5 B or C gates and have to make the 15-25 min journey back to A gates and walk to the gate.
Outbound, I wouldnt risk that if there’s only 1 HK flight per day. Coming back it’s BA’s problem to get you on the next flight to MAN if it’s all on one ticket.
No security or passport on the outbound.
On the inbound it is usually ok as long as the flight from HKG is on time or early, but any slight problem and yes you could easily miss the onward flight. However as the HKG flights land early in the morning and as long as both flights are on one ticket then you will just go on the next flight to MAN.
Outbound seems v risky; personally I wouldn’t do it. Assuming long haul is BA, you only have a boarding pass check at T5 but even so it’d be too risky for me. The HKG flights are late in the day and as a rule long haul goes on time and short haul slides as the day progresses if there are any problems. Basically 20 mins later than scheduled into Heathrow and you aren’t making it and you get to Hong Kong a day later.
Return should be fine, the Far East arrivals are usually on time and well ahead of most other inbounds – while you have to immigrate and clear security I would go for it rather than hang around Heathrow for hours. Worst case you still get home the same day.
Thanks for all the replies. Looks like outbound is riskier than inbound.
Just realised that I put HKG in my original post as my destination is PVG which departing at 12:40. It will be BA business class all the way for a family of 4. However there are only 2 seats left for the one with more reasonable two and half hour transfer time.
