I remember at various times you (Rob) mentioned hosting costs. I’ve no idea about traffic to the site, but have noticed over the last couple of months the site is very laggy and unresponsive. Particularly hitting the recent topics button in the forum, but not limited to that. Hit button, it maybe several seconds before the page refreshes.
This is on an iPad, with good WiFi and no noticeable problems on many other sites.
It is particularly slow today, possibly Amex news related.
Not noticed it being slow at all for me, but there are so many things that affect people differently (host location, caching, mirroring…)
The dull answer is ‘it depends’.
We have industrial scale hosting – almost £10,000 per year. If we suddenly get a link on BBC News or similar, it won’t fall over. The server is in London so for UK readers latency should be minimal.
Google actually stores data in Chrome on how long pages take to load and we see that. For those who know what these things mean, LCP and FID are well inside tolerance on desktop and mobile. Time To First Byte is the only laggy indicator.
That said, there has been a general slowdown in server response speed over the course of the year (PHP + MySQL average response of 0.55) which we should take a look at.
